Let me start off by saying that I know this is a very obvious statement, but I am going to say it anyway. Modercoinmarts free shipping is not really free...To expand on this statement I will say that their pricing is a bit higher then most other sites, so the easy point that I am making is they are making up on the shipping by giving you a flat rated price on their items and making it seem like the shipping is free. In reality they are having you still pay for the shipping, its a selling technique that has been in use for a very long time. 1 exampe is BOGO, anyone ever go to a store and they are having a buy one get one deal going on, or buy one get half off sale. Simply put, its not really buy one get one or get half off, its raise the product back up to full price and they are still making the same they would if they did indivual sales at a discounted price. The lingo is used to make your mind think you are actually making out better when in reality you paying the same if not more. same goes for Moderncoinmart. Think about it, they are still selling Amerivan silver eagles for over $26 when silver was in the sub $19 range this past week. Other sites were selling for lower amounts and also offering better deals on shipping if you made larger purchases. So let me ask you folks, did I just bable on a subject everyone already knew, or did I actually inform any of you on something new?
It will not come as a surprise that dealers want to make profits. So yes, a seller who wants to advertise that "shipping is free" may well charge more for the coins or bars. Christian
I can charge $50.00 and offer free shipping, or I can charge $45.00 and an extra $5.00 for shipping. Is there a difference?
Ok, I think you all are thinking way to literal. This is a different thinking process I am speaking about. If you see a sale for $19.99 that always seems to be a better deal then a flat out $20 price tag, in this instance free shipping seems like a better deal then to charge for shipping is all I am saying. Its a way to get people to purchase from their site by making it seem like they have a better offer then others. I forgot that I am dealing with people who probably never worked in retail at one point in their lives and don't understand this strategy. Think big picture, in reality they are not offering a better pricing then anyone else.
Free shipping makes there asking price higher so actually unless people look at shipping it seems more expensive. Some people find shipping fees irritating, some people figure out total costs and some buy low price without regard to shipping. Honestly I have no clue what the point of this thread is suppose to be, but I gather from your threads you basically don't like sellers.
I have no issues with sellers, this topic is about selling philosphy thats all, like I said way too literal on here. read the contents, what do you see. Its a idea or perspective on how these companies do their business is all. I thought it would be a unique topic but guess I was wrong.
I think most people realize free shipping is a sales strategy (see Amazon Prime) so I am not understanding what we are suppose to be discussing. And you may not realize it or I maybe wrong but many of you posts seem to contain statements about something being too expensive or where else can I buy. Reality is something is worth what the market will bear, no more no less. People also have reasons for using who they use for example I won't use Goldmart because of some bad experiences even though I received product, I like Provident but they have to charge Texas residents sales tax on orders under $1,000, I use APMEX on both their website and Ebay because they have great selection and good customer service plus I can do sub-$1,000 orders from them with no sales tax and sometimes that is the most cost efficient way for me to go. I could go on and on but you get the point.
I do get your point, my topic was to stir up some conversation about the way companies do their sales, thats all this was meant to be. Just now I got you to explain in detail how a few companies you have dealt with were, and if it was a good or bad experience, in all thats what I was looking for.
There is probably a more straighforward way to ask the question or just leave a specific vendor's name out of the OP. My guess is that would stir more conversation than such a focused statement.
Fair enough, I will try to be more to the point in my topics and not point out specific companies unless its related to them.
You said it right there. There are people who come here and ask "Where's the best place online to buy one ounce of silver?" The answers are usually the places that offer free shipping with no minimum purchase. Yes and not really. But there are some sites out there that do have good sales. Take for example Provident's current sale for OPM 10 oz bars. They are offering them for a very competitive $1.19 over spot per ounce and buying one gets you free shipping on your entire order.
Most of us didn't just fall off the turnip truck yesterday. We get that there's a total price on our purchases including shipping. On generic bullion for stacking, MCM is not the first place I look. I believe their specialty is slabbed modern coins and collectible bullion products. I think their prices on those are competitive. Price is not everything when you shop for these items; condition, availability, speed, customer service, and other factors are important.
And of course if the mentioned company googles their name, to see what people are saying about them ,good or bad, they may respond to the OP in a legal way. If you were really just bringing up an obvious selling technique for discussion there was no reason to mention a specific name. The software gives about 24 hrs for the OP to edit their post and then it is there as written.
Interesting, I recently ordered a Britania and a Liberdad from MCM via Fee-bay. I found their price BIN to be as good as/if not better with others that charged shipping. Getting ready to order some more, and noticed there is a moderately long thread on CT about MCM in which the President responded to the OP.
This is why I'm not loyal to any one place or person. You got to figure out what you want and scour the internet, publications, bid boards, and even make brick and mortal calls to find that best price with or without shipping. Otherwise you'll make yourself paranoid and crazy thinking you could have gotten a better deal than you did. I've seen "wholesale" priced dealers both brick and mortar and online asking twice as much as some large retail internet companies and then again I've gotten some steals from "wholesalers" and retailers alike. Taking the time to do the research + the math= a happy transaction every time no matter who the seller is. It also doesn't hurt to ask most places want your business and will price match or at least compromise close to it rather than lose the sale and possibly any future business to another company.
