Where can I get the best price buying rolls from a company that doesn't search the rolls?

Do companies search them for good coins or do they take them straight from the monster boxes and sell them?

When you by them most of the time they are a roll by the year you opt to get from what is on hand,,,,

I know APMEX has a service where you can buy MintDirect rolls which are ASE/bullion coins that are still sealed and as they came from the mint, there is a pretty large premium though.

Unsearched...the only way to be sure is to buy directly from the US mint,

Or eBay, because everything on eBay is truly unsearched... :)

The green monster boxes are only sold to specific distributors, who in turn, submit them in bulk for the highest grades. None of these are unsearched since the grading services have sorted through them. In all probability, any tubes (or rolls) that are sold in the aftermarket contain coins that would grade 68 or lower.

Except that you can't buy bullion coins directly from the US Mint...

There has been a shortage of silver eagles this year, and by now the big dealers have already sent off a ton of them to be graded. So if you buy a roll now, I would bet that you will get an unsearched roll. The mint sold 3.4 million of them to the authorized dealers last month. There is no way they have the time or money to pay people to sit there and sort through all of them.

I think the dealers are more than happy to get as many of them as possible out the door quickly while they are getting a ridiculous $5+ per coin premium.

If they are getting that. Right now I see three dealers offering ASE's under $25 each. Seems to me premiums have settled down. Anyone paying $5 premiums are simply getting held up in my view. I would remember any dealer trying to jack your wallet like that.

You're right. I had not checked in a couple weeks.

That's a good thing. Hopefully ebay prices of common modern commemoratives will start dropping as well. It has seemed to me that the gold closely follows the price of gold, but the prices of the silver commemoratives are stickier.

Or buy an unopened monster box from a dealer, I don't think you can even buy bullion eagles from the mint unless you are an authorized purchaser.

On here are three large firms offering ASE's at $25 or less at this moment, so $3.20 premium or less. As always, shop around. Personally I find keeping abreast of such information helpful, and useful. Pull out your smartphone at a coin show and demonstrate to them the "going price", and see if they will work with you. Having documentation that what you are offering is a fair price, (and having cash in your hand), always helps get a deal done. I would buy everything in person if people near me had what I was shopping for, at a fair price.

I think you've missed my point. The "big dealers" ARE the distributors who receive the green monsters directly from the Mint. They do not search any of them. If these dealers (distributors) order 20, 30, 40 or more green monsters, they ship them directly to the grading services without even examining them. Even small dealers who've ordered just one box can submit them without searching and still get the bulk discounts. It is the grading services that do the searching for them. They are submitted in bulk for a reduced rate, and those that do not meet their minimum grade (usually MS69) are returned unslabbed. The dealer would then try to sell the unslabbed coins in quantities (20 or more) to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

You're right. I forgot about the minimum grade.

Still I would think they are done submitting them for grading. Or at least they are submitting very few compared to the millions being sold per month. So a roll of 20 bought now is likely to be untouched. In February they very well could have been ms68- rejects.
