I looked on that site for my state. Funny. My grandfather has some unclaimed property . He's been deceased since 1994. I called my mother to have her look into it.

Don't dis that unclaimed property thing. I got a message from a State Senator referring to unclaimed stuff in NY and when I plugged my name into the data base I scored a few bucks from a defunct insurance policy.

how do you do search the unclaimed property for your name/family name??? i can not find a site for IL, if someone can find one for IL please send me a link to it in a message, it would be very interesting to see, one reason being my grandfather was a founder of some big organization..

Search under treasurer office. They usually run unclaimed property. Unfortunately, they usually sell off items after a few years, and will just pay yyou what it sold for if they find you.

Remember, the IRS is waiting in the wings when you claim that 'lost' gold. You did remember to report the transaction when you bought it, didn't you? :)

No one has to inform the IRS of their precious metal purchases. If you stored your gold in a safe deposit box, then forgot about it and it was turned over to the State for protection, it is not income when recovered. The only thing that has to be reported to the IRS is any loss/gain when the metal is sold.

Is it like a Parking Garage? ...if you lose your ticket, they "assume" you've been there 24 hours?

In other words, if you don't have a record of what you paid, they assume it's ALL taxable?
