Just picked up 9 Morgans, 1 trade dollar, and 3 halves for 18.5 times face. Good deal? Thanks Jerry

Sounds like a good deal. Let's see the Trade dollar.

have not received the coins yet. Bought them from a guy who I deal with online.

You paid $18.50 per morgan? That's either an excellent deal or you just paid for worthless cast metal.

will do. They might be funky looking. Seller said they looked like a failed toning experiment. We shall see!

Then you can just dip them and sell them as cull and still make a lot of money.

little bit maybe. What do people dip silver dollars in anyway?

You aren't supposed to dip any coins but if the tarnish looks horrible you could remove it with a silver tarnish remover since they are bullion coins. Any collector would know it was cleaned.

Tyler is right, never dip a coin that could potentially have any collector value. If you know for a fact it doesn't and just want to shine it up I have heard of people using acetone.

    Acetone won't shine coins up.

I can't believe you got a trade dollar for 18.5x face, whether or not it was toned badly. They go for hundreds of dollars. I would wonder about the morgans as well. If they are cc's then you might be getting a bunch of fakes. Sorry. It's happened to me. That's why I buy common date Morgans and am very wary of trade dollars. It might end up being fine, but a common date morgan goes for between $25 and $28 even now, and even culls go for between $23 and $25, so something either is fishy or you are getting an incredible deal.

I got some junk silver from him about 2 months ago. I took some of the coins to my LCS because I felt they might be better than melt value. Sold 10 half dollars and 1 quarter for 220 dollars. I think his sell price than was 20X face so I paid 105 for those coins. One half was a capped bust, several others were seated halves. Also 1 stone mountain. He seems to come up with interesting mix of coins which is fun.

What? Capped bust for 20x face? That's incredible. Keep buying if he's selling that kind of coin for those prices! Incredible. I guess it happens. I got a holed 8 reales for $20, so I guess it's possible, but it is a rare event for most of us. Maybe this guy has no idea what he has, or just sells it all bulk rate. Either way, if it's real you are way ahead of the game.

thats why I bought more from him. Granted the capped bust coin was very worn down maybe ag at best but I think I got 15 or 20 for it. Can not wait to see that trade dollar!

got the coins today. Morgans looked vf to xf but odd coloring. One looked a bit purplish, others had brownish black spots on them. All passed the magnet weight test so legit coins. Here is a pic of the trade dollar. [IMG] [IMG]

I'd buy discolored Morgans at 18.5x face all day long. And as for trade dollars at melt, well... :)

I don't see any of the danger signs from that coin on this one, although I can't imagine anyone actually claiming to authenticate a trade dollar from pictures.
