May 1st is the day to buy silver!

Scrambling? I've been steadily securing wealth for years and will continue to do so. Currency is not wealth. It is a medium of exchange. Those who want to maintain their savings in debt based currency are more than welcome to do so. I'm not sure what's funny about preferring sound money to paper that is backed by debt. If anything it's funny that people get ridiculed for preferring real money.

I think of paper money as gift certificates which are good for now. May as well spend it, because it may be inflated away, or the company might go out of business and then your gift certificate is useless. It's really handy stuff, I'll admit, but will it always be so useful?

 

My father worked for a company called Ben T. Young out of Cinn. Oh. He spent 25 years of his life with this company on the complete faith that as long as he paid his union dues he would be set when he got older. He should have put his faith in gold or silver and he would have been set by now. The paper he paid for 22 years was usless in the end. But he has a trunk full of about 200 pounds of old coins that are yet to be went through. I would say that is his retirement.

 

If that was really the only reason they cared about it, they could just buy gold plated tungsten. They like it because it's valuable, and it's value is historically intertwined with its use as money.

 

Bro, dude, medo-chan, I do think just slightly​ differently from most people here myself. Gold will hit $50 by the end of the century. I merely have respect for the English language, and feel inclined to defend it from such vicious attacks as the one I quoted.

 

Like others have said, paper money was originally (or, at least, ideally) fully backed by and convertible into gold. Not fiat.

I try to buy a couple of ounces a month, what's the place to buy that doesn't kill on shipping? I looked at apmex or something like that and their shipping is high.

The link I gave you is to a 1 oz bar for $27.50 shipped, won't find anything cheaper than that online including shipping. They are probably losing money on this item once you factor in everything, but its an attempt to get new customers I would assume.....

well I prefer 1 ounce bars but I figured I'd check to see what a 5oz would be, might just get those. I figured overall it'd be cheaper

 

The price they offer for their 5 oz bars is actually exactly the same as their 1 oz bars per oz, so you might as well get the 1 oz bars if that is what you like.

the 5 oz bar is 137.50/5= $27.50 per oz
the 1 oz bars are $27.50

Yes, any legitimate website would only sell using troy ounces.

The only site I've seen where they try and trick people is a few individual sellers on Ebay.
