Well as it has done been said and I am sure you have done all you can. My suggestion would be to try and remember as much as you possibly could about this guy. What he drove and such and write it down. I don't believe in rendering evil for evil at all. I do however believe in making things right. I have bought and sold tons of coins off of CL and have never had a shady experience. I do however have a friend who bought a coin that turned out to be fake. He tried and tried to get a hold of the guy and couldn't. He chalked it up as a lost. Several months went by and low and behold they came in contact with each other. One thing about it that I've noticed pretty much collectors know one another. What I would do is tell as many people you could in your community and eventually it'll all work out. Like you said you live and learn.

I would chalk it up to education and move on. Definitely report it and keep trying, but I don't think you will get anything out of this guy. He's obviously a scam artist.

I like to buy coins because I have found that almost anything else even if it's silver seems cheesy. I bought a few bars early on, but now I buy almost exclusively pre-64 silver coins.

If he provided you a fake address, and did not show up, that pretty much tells you that he doesn't want to refund you. He probably knew that the bar was not silver.

The police are not as helpful any more. I don't mean any offense to anyone on here that is a cop, but cops don't help you out like they used to. They often claim "it's a civil matter", and then stay out of it. I've been there before.

You DO have his cell phone number. Provided it's not a prepaid phone (those can easily be disposed of due to non-contract) you should be able to get somewhere with that.

I doubt there was ever a time that cops would get involved in a situation like this, there is probably nothing they could charge him with. He can claim he believed it was silver, and it'd be difficult for anyone to prove otherwise.

Come on, Dirty Harry Callihan would have beaten him to a pulp and take the money out of his wallet, :)

What's the phone number? I'm sure someone can figure out who it belongs to...

I'm assuming that last comment was tongue-in-cheek. What is Stainless Steel selling by the pound right now?

I'm sorry this happened to you :(
It really is sad but unfortunately there are bad people out there
Please be sure to follow up with your police report if need be and I hope you recover swiftly from this situation if you have yet to do so

Nothing the police would really do in this situation anyways because it would always come down to your word versus his and he could say 'hey I sold the guy a silver bar and the one he has there isn't the one I sold him' etc. Really tough lesson to learn especially starting out with a big loss but a good lesson to learn early on if you plan on investing in PM"s and buying in these types of situations.

Well, I do have a text from him with pictures of the bar attached to it. That could prove that the bar that I have is the bar that he wanted to sell me. Regardless, someone on this forum did a telephone number search of this guy's phone number but nothing came up.

Regardless, someone on this forum did a telephone number search of this guy's phone number but nothing came up. Since I have a possible fake name, fake address and probably a disposable/pre-paid phone number, I don't have enough information to file a small claim, right? I would have to have some sort of contact information on him. Too bad I didn't take a picture of his driver's license or write down his phone number.

They often claim it's a civil matter because it often is, like this situation. You would have to prove that the guy selling the bar purposely obtained the OP's money by deception. That would be theft by deception. Now we all know he did, but proving it is another story. He will say it was given to him as payment and for all he knew it was legit. End of case. Any phone calls between the OP and the seller are hearsay unless the OP recorded them.

OP, sorry it didn't work out for you.

BTW, what "ring test" are you referring to? It would be difficult to get a 55 ounce bar to resonate properly. I'm starting to assume you made this up, which is sad, but not as sad as you buying 55 ounces of silver for $500 and not thinking immediately that it was fake.

This guy sold out his moral character for $500... Ha, some day I'll wager he's going to regret doing stuff like this.. surrendering his good name for what turns out to be a pittance in the grand scheme of things. You have to tip your hat to people who refuse to give up their good name for any amount of money.

You can re-evaluate your role in this and walk away a wiser person from this experience. If you weren't clouded by the desire for quick huge profit, you probably wouldn't have acted so rash and asked for the good advice first.

Life goes on... you weren't the first and you won't be the last.

    Tabor,

Thank you for sharing your story. It could probably happen in one way or another to almost any of us....

Please let any of those with an "I told you so" mentality just be like water off a ducks back. Everyone makes mistakes and that is truly the way we learn.

Again, sincere thanks for your story. If each member does not learn from your post, they are missing the whole point of our community. To be able to support each other is truly paramount!
