2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program Proof Silver Dollar (5G3) $65 each I can get new older dated Commemorative Coin Program Proof Silver Dollars stabbed for $20-30 less every day. The US Mint is way too high on these.:rollling::rollling: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=16816&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10141
Mostly they are too high because they know they won't sell too many. Nobody wants another coin with someone's face on it. Lack of creativity.
I can get older tons of other US PROOF Commemorative Silver Dollars coins for half that every day ($26-35.00 each). They do not hold their retail value.
Only the higher mintage ones and those are selling for more than their lower issue price. Try buying the lower mintage ones for half the issue price - some are selling at 20 times their issue price.
they popped the Army half up in price higher than any other commem half- it created a major rarity that tripled in value
Everything you get from the US Mint is substantially marked up so I don't know why the 5 Star General Coins were brought up as some kind of comparison marker. Is it really news to anyone on this forum that the US Mint sells for high prices? The bottom line is coin collectors buy what they want, even from the US Mint and you really can't deny that statement. If you're simply stacking ASE's then you really don't need the US Mint. Personally I wanted the 5 Star General Coins so I bought the set of three. Truthfully I only wanted the gold but figured the price was better on the set being as there's only 10,000 sets being minted or available.
You're right, they don't. This is where you have to decide whether or not you want to be a collector of these modern pieces, or an investor of these modern pieces. Collectors......true collectors, give little thought as to the future pricing of these offerings from the mint. Investors.....smart investors, shy away from such examples and put their money where it will do them the most good. So my advice to OP is that if the initial outlay of money troubles you that much, then by all means, refrain from purchasing coins from the US Mint. You can stand firm, howl and bluster over the fact that mint products are overpriced but it ain't going to make one bit of difference. The mint will continue to price things as they wish..........
Absolutely true! I don't buy many coins but I especially liked the General MacArthur gold so I didn't even think about resale value because I didn't buy to sell. Beautiful set, just got it right now, around 20 minutes ago. Here's a couple of pics, I am lousy with a camera, but I love to show off anyways.
