Hey all, 18+ year numi here...been collecting coins nearly half my life, especially silver. Mainly Morgan, Peace, Liberty Dollars...and of course ASEs. Until recently, I've collected solely for numismatic purposes, not really "caring" so much about premiums. Else, why would I have so many Proof ASEs? Anyways, started stacking silver a short time ago, mainly 1 & 5 oz rounds and bars. With my stacker hat on I've been VERY cognizant of premiums and am always looking to buy at the lowest. For the most part I've been able to keep the two hats separated....my coins are my coins, and my silver stack is my silver stack. Now I'd like to actually start diversifying and stacking silver coins...mixing the two worlds. I want to keep stacking, real silver coins keeps it a bit exciting for me. Of course I have to be okay with paying slightly higher premiums on my silver stack...but I'm okay with that since I'll still be collecting rounds and bars. My question: I recently got the go ahead from Mrs. Agaholic to purchase ~80oz of silver. I decided to go with a tube of ASEs, a tube of CMLs, and a tube of Phils (65oz total). I really wanted to round this out with a tube of Silver Kooks (they're so beautiful), but I just can't get past the premiums. Doing some research on here and other boards, I thought I'd look into Libertads, but those seem to have higher premiums as well. Is there another well respected legal tender silver coin that can be had for near ASE and CML premium levels? What do you all recommend? If I can't find anything, I'm just going to sink it into 1oz Provident Metal OPM rounds...as those look pretty sweet from the pics I've seen. Thanks.
Personally, I really do like the RCM wildlife series. You can still pick up the buffalo or antelope for a fair premium. With a mintage limit of 1million, they still make plenty but you just never know if one will hit the big time. I have a nice stash of wolves and grizzlies, and the ROI on those is solid.
Check out the 2013 Britannia as well. This is the first year of .999 silver. I also like the 2013 Fiji Taku. This is the first year of new obverse (no queen). TC
Ditto. I just got my bison a couple weeks ago to complete the set which I think will be a good set to have. For only an extra dollar or two over the price of an ASE or a CML I think the premiums on these will grow over time, probably not like the wolf, but these days you won't find any government bullion coins minted with less than 1 million except for the Perth lunars which are more expensive, unless you go for the very high premium coins which I am not convinced are a good bet. I don't think kookaburras, Brittanias, and pandas are a slam dunk anymore now that they all have higher mintages, although the 2013 panda for $37 and change is tempting. I also like the 2013 kook at 1 million minted but the premium is just a little higher than the wildlife series, and the design is very nice IMO.
RCM Wildlife series....will have to look into that. ALways a fan of RCM products. If I were to be able to get a deal, which is more recommended, Brittanias or Libertads? Thanks.
I'd do the Fiji Takus. Low premiums. They've only been made a few years now, so the collector base could grow.
Phils are already on the way...along with ASE and CMLs. Just trying to figure out what to fill out the other ~20oz with. Been reading a bit and still having trouble deciding between Brits and Libertads. Based on price...think I'll likely be going with the Brits. Gotta admit, I know nothing about Fiji Takus. Will have to look into it as I just don't want to jump into a coin I know nothing about. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Will let you know how I wind up rolling...
WOW...Those Takus are beautiful. The premium seems right in line with the Kooks I originally decided against....actually even a smidge higer. Works out to about $2 more per coin for either of these vs the ASE and CML, so I'd have to pick between a turtle and a bird if I decided to go with the higher premium. The Brits seem EVEN HIGHER in some places...Provident metals for example. Is there no other coin out there with premiums similar to the ASE, CML, and Phils? Thx.
I have gone almost the same cycle as the OP. numismatric to bullion to a blend. I like a lot of the Perth mint products. I've been in them for a few years and they seem to go up more than just the silver price. ASEs and Maples just track silver but you pay the premium. I go for generic over those.
1 oz silver coins have alwys been my weakness. And of course I'm new-ish to bullion. Was looking for a coin (legal tender), that is beautiful and appeals to my coin collector side (and has some other non-silver value)...but that had low premiums to appeal to my bullion collector side. Does not have to be "rare" per se. However, the part of me that likes collecting beautiful silver coins is winning out against the sensible bullion purchaser and I might wind up buying BOTH the Kooks and the Takus!
Would say the freedom girl and death queen are pretty awesome looking. But they do take forever and a day to ship. There is also a new dutch coin that is 6 oz. its way over priced but one of the coolest coins ive ever seen. I cant remember the name but it shouldnt be hard to find.
go ahead and get them. just think about all the ways people waste money, let alone a "hobby" of collecting money/PM. no worries.
Still haven't bought those last 20 (or is it 40 now? Ha ha...) oz yet, but I did just get my first score of the year. --> http://www.cointalk.com/t167879-52/#post1672178
