I own and operate a home remodeling business in N.H. which puts me in contact with a lot of scrap aluminum and copper, I have used it many times to make a new purchase. It can be a lot of work though especially if you want top dollar, for things like copper wire i have find it more profitable to not strip the coating. Either way I wish you well in your endeavor and what a great idea, one i may use myself.....
2011 Canadian Maple Leaf. Believe it or not I got this entirely with tip money over the past 2 weeks....normally we dont get tips. Some tax returns must have come and people are feeling generous. Price: 31.66 Spot price at time of purchase: 28.66
I use a similar method, but I use things even less valuable than copper or steel (in my opinion). I just put up on eBay things that my family and friends don't need. My boy gets sick of a toy? Sell it. My buddy has a basement full of stuff he wants gone? I sell it. I usually say I'll sell their things if they give me ten percent, but most of my friends and family just tell me to get the stuff out of their house. I know the value of things and most don't. My buddy had an old pair of retro Air Jordans and he was baffled that I would take his old worn sneakers, but someone felt them valuable enough to send me enough fiat for them to buy a 2013 1/10 ounce Krugerrand. It's insane to me that people value plastic nicknacks, but almost my entire gold collection has been purchased this way.
I most likely won't be buying pandas from the local coin shop though...they charge 12 bucks over spot...YIKES! It would actually cost me less to order and pay shipping on those.LOL
Sounds like you're working to collect silver bullion much like the rest of us do, are you a canner? Good for you!
I do that a little for my family/neighbors, maybe I should step it up and buy some silver with the money! Now I'm excited!
Love the idea of this. I'm thinking this will be my first summer task when I graduate...go home and help my parents clean out their trash pile. Scrap metal adds up! Of course, on second thought, I think the first thing I'll buy is a replacement shed for my grandma...but that'll be one trip or so...and then I can scrap that rusty old thing too.
Good luck. I might go and scrap out some pipes aluminun sprinkler pipe this spring and turn it into some silver. If you have any areas people go shoot their you can pick up a lot of brass. The good stuff is worth a lot more than scrap.
Well right now I guess you can say I'm a canner...I'm not really going through anybody's recycling for it. But that is making up most of the stuff I bring in...
Thanks for the comment. I am limited as to where to go unless I want to spend the gas. But I have been doing some pricing to see if a drive might be worth it...and Good Luck to you as well.
I never thought about the brass thing....might have to go visit some former shooting sites my friends have used.
Even though brass is only ~$.40/lb, I once went to a shooting range of a friend's relative once, and I got about $3 worth for free.
Update!!! Alright, I had to compromise yet again. Local coin shop doesn't have much along the lines of foreign bullion. However I did get lucky and they had something a little different. First I had 5 dollars left over from the prior purchase. I had a salesman at my work offered me 20 dollars to replace a headlight bulb(which he had bought) and pull and clear his engine codes...easy as pie. Then I had a scrap cooler part that the scrapers gave me 7 bucks for. So that left me with 32 dollars...Went to the shop and picked this up. 2013 Canadian Pronghorn Antelope Price:31.92 Spot price at time of purchase: 28.92 I did check price of this coin at Provident Metals...and they had it listed for 32.97...so not a bad deal.
Wow I really applaud you guys. Love the ideas. In fact I started looking through my wife's closet for stuff to sell on ebay - lots of shoes and purses, she wont miss them, right? Seriously though, I have a lot of stuff in the garage and basement that is just sitting around for years. Now as I look at it i am seeing stacks of silver laying around...
