Question about testing gold

i found a gold ring today that says 14kt and i just want to make sure. I have acid but have never tried it out. I understand the concept, but after the acid is placed on there, is it safe to wash down the drain or what do i do with it?

You can neutralize the acid using baking soda or a baking soda/water solution.
