How can I figure out the right price to sell my gold cufflinks?

I live in NYC and do not trust the prices I have been quoted on NYCs diamond district for my gold cufflinks. I think I can see small writing on the cufflinks that say "375" and "III", does that make sense?

    Thanks.

How much do the cufflinks weigh? 375 means they are probably 9karat gold, which is .375 pure gold content.

Get a scale and weigh it. Factor in the 37.5% weight as gold, and you got the spot price.

Unless you go to more than one shop (you're in NYC. There is more than one), you won't know what the fair price is.

Means 9 karat. 37.5% gold. Welcome to CufflinkTalk! :)

Edit: I'm slow on the post today! LOL

I'd say a fair price for 9k gold is 70-80% of gold spot at least (and thats assuming they dont have any value above the gold content). I wouldn't sell em for any less than that.

Some shops could offer something ridiculous though like 20-40% of spot though so it's a good thing you decided to do some research first.

Wow Tinpot, I wouldn't think 37.5% gold would sell for that much. - Oh, and is it carot or Karat? Or is it different with different countries?

I haven't used these guys but there posted prices are quite good, from what I understand if this guy sent in his gold he'd receive 98.5% of spot http://hitechpmr.com/Rates/GoldScrap.aspx?i114s114

That is the best paying refiner I've seen, but even other refiners will typically pay 80%+ for gold. (even poor karat)

Gold shops will need to make their cut as well, but you'd be leaving quite a bit of money on the table if you sold for less than 70% or so imo

It's also karat or carat as far as I know, not sure why the difference....

Current price on 9K gold is around $19.40/gram (24K is $51.72/gram). This according to:

    http://www.goldcalc.com/

Buy price is whatever percentage of above is offered by a particular store/shop, and varies widely.

Karat is a measure of the purity of Gold. 24 karat is 100% gold. 12 karat is 50% gold.

Carat is a measure of weight used for gem stones. 1 carat = 200 mg (0.2 grams).

Carrot is a long, conically shaped, orange colored, and quite tasty, root vegetable.

Karat is a measure of purity, often abbreviated K, and is used with precious metals, especially gold. 1K = 1/24 pure (so 24K gold is pure gold).

Carat is a measure of weight, usually used with precious or semi-precious stones, especially diamonds. 1 carat = 200mg (5 carats = 1g).

Carrot is an orange root vegetable that Bugs Bunny is often depicted as eating lol...

And there's your homonym lesson for the day.

Thanks everyone. They both weigh 8 ounces. So that is 226.796 grams, at 19.40/gram, that should be $4399.84 if the cufflinks are pure gold.

I doubt they are pure gold, probably just a gold outer layer. Would you agree?

If so, what is the best way to figure out what this outer layer is fairly worth?

Overall is it better to just visit a couple shops and go with the best bid?

or should i send it to a website like:

8 ounces would be awfully large cufflinks, like the size of hockey pucks! Maybe that says 8 grams on the scale, which would sound more realistic

And if they are 8 grams each, that would be 16 total ounces multiplied by $19.40

So something like $310 is full gold value, so probably expect a realistic buy of somewhere around $220-$260 maybe

8 ounces a piece cant be right, lets think about the 5oz America the Beautiful silver rounds, you mean hes walking around with 1 1/2 of those on each arm? Realistically i would HIGHLY doubt that as being accurate, but who knows

Its all good, were here to help. You may not be familiar with a small scale like what you are using, i know i wasnt the first couple of times i used a set. I would say they were probably 8 grams each if thats the weight you seen, that would sound about right.

    Just did some new figures.
    Gold is $1613.70 right now.
Your links weigh 8 ounces (troy, I hope)
    That comes to $12,909.60
They are 37.5% gold, making their gold content worth $4841.10.
I really don't think you'll get more than 30%, though, due to smelting costs.
So I think you could fairly expect to receive $3872.88 for your links.
(4 ounces per link seems awfully heavy to me, but who am I to judge?)

Please weigh them in grams. those are easier numbers to work with.
