If the Mint weight was 26.73g and normal 'worn' is 5% (= 25.39g) what's the approximate amount of metal additionally lost in the punching/clipping of well-circulated Morgans? Thanks. http://www.apmex.com/Product/8553/Morgan___Peace_Silver_Dollar_Worse_Than_Cull.aspx Would those coins be ~ -10% underweight on average?
Hard to tell, depends on the size of the hole i guess. But judging by the pic on Apmex site you posted, that hole does not seem to be 10% of the size of the surface of the coin, so i would doubt its 10% of the weight. You could easily get 20 holes that size on the face of the coin, so I would guess maybe 5% at most? Not sure that was helpful or not, but just my thoughts.
Hotpocket- I've asked related questions before. There's no consensus apparently, so guesses are welcome. I don't know, for Morgans: http://www.cointalk.com/t144944/ Here's a related thread, and the answer to Quincy's question is WOW, SEE THE DIFFERENCE! http://www.cointalk.com/t216851-5/#post1588859
