Just found out there is a petition to audit the US gold reserves to see who actually has claim to it... Still needs about 20,000 signatures but once they hit that number then the White House will have to respond. I for one would sure like to know!

In case you missed it, here is the White House response to a petition to build a Death Star :)

Has there ever been a petition about anything that ever resulted in action by the Federal Government?

They did respond to a request to build a death star! Even if they reject it, at least it will help to shed some light on it, hopefully one day it will happen~

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Who said they "HAVE" to respond to it if there are 20,000 more signatures? I have never heard of any Federal provisions dictating petitions will have any effect.

I for one won't sign because I do not want an audit. Any audit by definition is dangerous to the security structures and procesures in place. I would rather keep the gold safe rather than risk it for some sort of publicity stunt.

I think the new "rule" is that the White House will respond to any petition with more than 100k signatures. But the answer could be no, or something like "appropriate measures are in place to secure the inventory." Nothing is going to happen.

    Just one question:

    Why?

Every five or ten years this comes up.

Ok, that is new to me. Is it just something this administration pledges to do? I have never seen anything written into the US code regarding petitions.

It's a pledge and seems to work as far as it goes. Obviously petitions can't make law.

Hopefully the petition includes a footnote stating the petitioners will pay for the cost of the audit?

    :)

How about pay for the cost of the audit AND the cost to change security procedures and infrastructure since by having a public audit these safeguards will by definition have been compromised.

The White House will consider any petition submitted if it has at least 100K (new minimum) signatures.
Consideration does not mean they will implement what the petition asks for, though. They most likely will answer NO!

I heard on the news this morning that the White House quadrupled the number of signatures required to get a response.

Yes. Up from 25K to 100K required for consideration.
