Should I leave it in the plastic "case" or put it in an air-tite case?

Take it out of the plastic and throw it in the silverware drawer.

There is a segment, fragment, group, portion of this hobby whose members tout the benefits of owning oxidized, colored coins. They pay strong money to own them. There are also 'coin doctors' out there that are cooking up a plethora of such coins and are so good at it that they even fool the TPG'ers. It's a relatively recent phenomena, only becoming popular in the last few years. Personally, I don't buy it but I can respect the collecting endeavor of others who do.

  4. I have never heard of toning adding to a bullion coin. I would think it would limit who you could sell it to.

That's true to a point. Most folks who buy bullion for bullion's sake like their coins blast white. Collectors, on the other hand, sometimes find the toning pleasing and alluring.

It would limit who you could sell it to. Fortunately, that small group will pay through the nose to obtain a nicely toned ASE. I sold a half dozen of rainbow toned ASE's in old PCI holders earlier this year for $200 each. For example:

It looks cool in its original packaging, but if you don't care too much for premiums on certain mints, an airtight case would be a good alternative.

I would recommend to take it out and stick it in an airtite I doubt that paper is archival grade and that plastic worries me a little lol

  12. I am an old head and in my life when home at a young age i never heard my dad ask anyone what he should do with what was his.
He was his own man and ive learned thats what sets us apart from others.
The ability to think for ones self is something i think that shows confidents.
If the plastic bothers you change it because its what you want to do not because others dont care for it.
Nothing ps me off any worse than to see a guy pick out a new car then take it to a friends house and ask if the color is ok or should it be green.
Makes you wonder if the guy can make a choice on his own.
He will be driveing cleaning and owning the car not his friend.
Seems today we want to own something others like when the real choice should be the one that makes the payments.

I think toning on a bullion ASE is a negative. People will think there is something wrong with it.

I certainly have the space for it in it's original packing and figured if it's worth more in it's original packaging then I'd leave it in there, if makes zero difference then I'd put it in an airtite. So far it's pretty split as some say leave it but the most value it seems is the toning that's starting, even though I'm not one who likes toning.

Boy oh boy have you aged old head in just one week... you know considering you yourself was just here asking advice about a coin as well, here in this thread. If you want to get it graded then get it graded "because its what you want to do not because others dont care for it" :too-funny:

I agree with you, I'm not one of the select that enjoy toning. I prefer my coins bright and shiny, however I'm going to leave this on in it's original case and let it tone some more. It seems the select few that do like toning will pay more for the coin so I see this as a possible investment - worse case it will still be worth melt so I'm not out anything.

I'm not familiar with the packaging for all the silver coins out there since I don't purchase that much silver, but IMO, if a coin is in that governmental vacuum seal that comes in sheets, I think it's best to leave them in that stuff.

  17. I always take my Pandas. Koalas and Kooks out of the original capsule and put them in foam ring air-tites. Prefer the look and feel and find them easier to store with other coins in tubes.

As silly as it may sound I pay a small premium when I buy things in Littleton holders on Ebay......I like their holders and their little tidbits of info they put. At times I will actually actively search terms like "Littleton" in the coin section....but of course, I am quite new to the hobby and I'm sure I'll outgrow this :)

Some things we never out grow Mike. I still like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches......:)

On second thought, I doubt I'll outgrow it......the holders make it much easier for the 6 year old to check the mail and handle the coins before they get put away in addittion to my preference for them. As long as I'm not paying twice what they are worth when buying directly from them, I'm fine paying a 5 percent premium or so.

This coin is not in the original government packaging. I'm pretty sure Littleton bought these coins in Mint rolls and then put them in their own packaging.
