Can we get some pictures of the whole coin? there might be a possibility that it was smashed together with the back of another Penny. Thanks!
Those help out a lot. I don't see any dings on the lip of the rim, but that doesn't mean it's not PMD. Also, I think you have a die crack going over "GOD" on the Obverse side. Might just be the picture, I dunno. ~M2~
i think it may just be the pic...These are about the best pics i could get of it. if you can pm me an address i can send you one to look at in person. i found nearly a whole roll of them.
Since you found several of them, I believe that they are strike through errors? The hub picked up a the metal C E that broke off and remained on the reverse side. The transfer might have been made when the dies came together without a planchet between them. That metal then made the imprint into the next number of coins that were minted. It eventually would fall out or deteriorate, possibly removed during maintenance. I suggest you contact Dr. James Wiles at CONECA, as he may find it of interest in that you have a full roll of these. You may have a 50c investment that is worth a few dollars ? gary
I think its a strike thru error. Nice find! Not sure on value but I'm sure someone will chime in on that Cody
Once you have enough posts you can share the auctions listing in the auction listing section here. I think you might get as much as a dollar or 2 a piece with free shipping on the bay. Cody
If that were the case, wouldnt the reverse side of the coin have flaws due to absent material on the reverse die?
No it's a stack-smashed coin. "CE" in "CENT" is the same upside-down as it is right side up. Since it's incuse it's from a coin that was placed on top of it.
If it's a whole roll and they're all in the exact same place, then I'd have to agree with giving CONECA a poke about it. I once had about 6 or 7 of something similar in a row in a roll (memorial cents), but they were all off by a few degrees from one another, and one was off by 90 degrees, which conclusively makes it a smash (someone sat something heavy on the end of the roll, or it took a hard hit).
these all appear to be in the exact same position. i have no way of measuring if they are off by a given number of degrees, but none are off enough to be noticeable without a measuring device of some sort. Thanks for the input.
