Hey guys this is my first post on Coin Talk. I just bought this Engelhard bar this morning. I've been collecting american prospectors and 10 oz poured bars but this one caught my eye at a show and I had to hunt it down because I couldn't stop thinking about it. When I see "low number" engelhard bars on ebay, they usually only have one or two 0's. The number on this bar is P000039. It's an old style 5 oz bar. What do you guys think? What's it worth?

    nice.

    value?

    silver X 5 ounces.

I can't see low serial #'s having a value above melt.

But, hey, what do I know, I collect coins!

    :)

All engelhard silver seems to have a 3-4 dollar premium.

Unless you find someone who collects Engelhard, it's worth whatever silver is worth at the time.

Its really a tough sell. Its worth what ever a normal one is worth unless you can find a enthusiast of this type of thing.

I don't know if that is necessarily true...it might be an easy sell. I know there are collectors of these bars out there and a low serial number is likely desirable to them, just like low serials are for currency collectors. Now, to a coin collector like myself...this bar is worth melt. But, to a bar collector I'm sure there is a premium.

I don't even collect these things and I'd be willing to pay an extra premium on it. Although I do collect anything with consecutive or low serials so maybe that has something to do with it. A number that low has got to be desirable to some folks out there. I would definitely shop it around before letting it go, but if it were me I would just keep it ;)

Thank you. Finally someone appreciates this thing for what it is. I did post in the bullion section right? I won't be selling this unless its the right price.

As far as I know the number is an assay office number and nothing more. Just a way of tracking where the bar is, who has it and if it's stolen a way to easily identify it. Coins that are slabbed have that too to most people it's nothing special. Someone could or would pay a bit more for saying I have one of the first but it will be a small niche market. To me the bigger prize would be having something like the physically largest, the bar worth the most or heaviest known bar or round, something along those lines.

I haven't ever seen a bar like that before. I really like the the fact that it's so unique, at least to me anyway.:thumb:

Wait so all Engelhard bars sell for a premium?

Yea they all have premiums. If anyone tells you otherwise just look on ebay. 10 ozt engelhard bars sell for about $340 while silver has been hovering around $28. Some older type bars can sell for double that.

A 5 ozt bar just sold for like $215. I think this bar is the lowest serial number of any type engelhard. I'm hoping to get $600 someday.

    Nice pick up.

There's no difference between collecting low serial #'s on paper or bars.

5 oz bars are less available than 10's low number and a loaf. I'd be willing to wager it would bring a $10-20 oz premium on eBay

Well what kind of premium should I expect for a 1 oz Engelhard? I bought it for $30, so could I make an easy profit?

Maybe a couple of bucks unless you run across someone who collects engelhard, then you might get a few more bucks.

If anyone needs confirmation that Engelhard bars carry a premium just try to get a 2 oz bar.

So does anyone think this Englehard bar I have commands a premium? What would it go for? It's a 10oz Englehard eagle bar

I think the op' bar is pretty sweet and could see myself paying spot plus $10, maybe $12.
