    I'd forgotten to look for the copper coins.....

    Italy made some really beautiful copper coins like your 1911 10 Centesimi. :)

    I'll see if I have some good ones to photograph in my copper book. [I keep most of my brown copper coins in one book. I find it convenient to view them all together with lighting specifically for viewing dark copper coins].

    Okay, so this is really strange:

    I saw this thread this morning. Thought, "Wow, those are some beautiful coins. I'll have to keep an eye out for those!"

    Went to an antique mall today. Sorted through a case of some guy who, according to the store worker, is "one of those survivalist guys with gun turrets on his house" and "is always drugged out of his mind" when he brings coins in. Most of his stuff is overpriced...but I see this lovely little coin in a bunch of bags he was selling for $15 each:

    DSC_5946.jpg DSC_5948.jpg

    What are the odds?

    Not only that, I'm looking this coin up in the Krause book...and it definitely weighs correctly at 9.99 g...and has edge lettering of ** FERT **

    I see this coin is listed as $200 in F, $500 in VF, and $1,000 in XF. Is this THAT coin? Did I just get it for basically free? (because there are other silver coins there that are at LEAST a full ounce of silver themselves...)

    Temper my enthusiasm if you will...

    Added up the remaining silver coins...2.1283 oz ASW. Paid $30 for everything.

    Also got a cool Israel 1977 10 Lirot Hanukka coin...low mintage of 46,106. Not worth much, really, but someone will probably want it for $5.

    Going back tomorrow. Going to buy all the rest of the bags, I think...remember seeing an 1888 Canada Dime with full rims in one bag...lol

    How many FERT? The correct number is three.

    There are two tipes of edge:

    *FERT* == *FERT* == *FERT* ==

    **FERT** == *FERT* == *FERT* ==

    The second type is more rare.

    For the first type, value in Italian catalog is € 90 for VF and € 180 for XF, for second type € 450 for VF and € 1,200 for XF.
    Fakes are known. Look here for photos of many genuine coins, zoom of the edge, and also fakes.

    Petronius,

    Thanks for the info! I'm so glad web browsers can translate sites, as well...otherwise...don't speak much Italian except how to order pizza...lol

    Here is the exact edge lettering (and I started a new thread to try to get opinions on grade):

    Edge Lettering reads: ** FERT ** FERT * (sunglasses symbol?) * FERT

    My coin's edge looks exactly like the photo posted on 8/17/2008 at 19:12 (the one in the third row, third from the left) - except it has two star punches. Font is the same. Shape of the star punches is the same. Getting excited!

    I located one more Italy coin in my collection from Vittorio Emanuele III's reign. It is inside a labeled 2x2 so I will apologize in advance for the lousy photo. This is a 1909 5 Centesimi.

    I think the prize for best coin posted in this thread goes to stldanceartist for finding a 10 Lire Biga in what looks to be VF35 - EF40 condition. Thanks for sharing the find. :)

    I picked-up this one at the Naugatuck Saturday coin show. It is listed in my 2004 catalog at $20 in UNC. It is listed in my more up-to-date catalogs at $130 & $140 in UNC. That's a pretty good example of how World coin prices have been increasing over the last decade. This 1923 1 Lire is made of Nickel.

    It's listed in my Italian coins catalog (2010) € 250 ($ 310)...real market value, in Italy, € 180-200 ($ 220-250).

    What you paid?

    Wonderful coin :thumb:

    Thank you for the coin complement.:)

    It is not easy to put an exact price paid. It was 1 of 7 coins for which I paid a total of $200. I think this one 1923 Italy coin was probably $100 of the $200 total amount paid. I will now post all 7 coins in the very popular "Your newest foreigh acquisition!" thread.

    1936R Italy 10 Lire

    Here is a 1936 Italy 10 Lire recently purchased at the 2012 ANA show. I just wanted to add the photos to this thread.

    I have heard of high quality fakes & hope that this is not one of them. Please let me know if you see anything suspicious about this coin.

    By these photos only, is difficult to judge.

    I think you checked weight and diameter, and they are regular. Please, check also the edge, with this photo

    http://numismatica-italiana.lamoneta.it/moneta/W-VE3/36

    The edge has three FERT separated by knots "Savoia" and rosettes with six petals, incuse.

    Sequence is:

    * FERT * § * FERT * § * FERT * §

    ( * rosette - § knot "Savoia")

    I hope it's clear :rolleyes:

    That rose colored tone underlying the spotted toning is so beautiful especially on the reverse around the horses... nice pickup!!!

    Thanks for the coin-complement. :smile IMO it is a beautiful coin design (from the reign of Vittorio Emanuele) and the toning really enhances the look.
