Greetings, I inherited this piece and would like to have it appraised. I suspect the 14K money clip enclosure might be detraction. The enclosure appears to slightly envelop the rim. I would hope a talented jeweler could remove it without damaging the coin. Any advice? New to coin collecting. Got a lot more to go through and this site is godsend...... My quick pass - lots of Mercury dimes worn/circulated, many pennies (two are 1943 copper and one zinc), proofs, JFKs, etc. More later...and thanks in advance! PS: Apologies but learning lighting is a challenge photographing coins
1904 Double Eagle: The Red Book prices are $1,825 at VF-20 and $2,250 at MS-63. At PF-63 which the coin isn't it's $27,500
Personally, I would have it appraised as a piece of jewelery first or whatever category a money clip falls into. If the coin is removed have it graded.
1943 D and 1943 Copper Pennies As requested Taxidermist, The pics will heads and tails in sequence as follows: 1943 D Copper: 1943 Copper: I have two 1943 Steel pennies I'll post next.
Have you done a magnet test on the copper 1943 cents? That will tell you if they are jyst copper plated or not.
Wow, they are steel, sigh.... I've had these for over forty years (inherited). Was plating done by mint or nefarious type? Thanks for the heads ups!
I wouldn't if I were you. The 1904 double eagle is basically selling for spot in grades up to and including MS63. Your coin, at best, would be put in a Genuine (PCGS) or Details (NGC) slab. Thus it is only worth its melt value. However, since it is already in a money clip, it may have some additional value to a coin collector to use it as a money clip, should you wish to sell it. So I'd just leave it alone.
Thanks for the advice. I am strongly considering selling it. Anyone know a reputable appraiser in the Washington DC area?
You don't need an appraiser. Take it to a jeweler and find out if the bezel is gold or not. That's the only additional thing you need to know. The clips I believe are brass, perhaps plated but I doubt that.
Even better. Then have the jeweler weigh it for you, and that's all you need. The weight of the coin is known, so you merely need to add the additional gold content from the clip and bezel and you have your total value - in gold anyway. Like I said, a collector may pay a bit more than the gold value just for the cool factor.
I like it as a money clip. leave it as is. I have an '04 double eagle along with lots of other people, it's a very common date. the money clip makes it cool. I would use it but the coin & clip would be worth more than my skimpy wad of $$
