Last month I talked with two dealers in my town about this very thing. They both echoed the same sentiment and basically said that there was very little demand for the DMPL and PL pucks. One of them was still sitting on two of the 2010s that were PCGS DMPL 68. They both confessed to having a little too much into them when the initial frenzy broke out. (probably why they`re still sitting on them) Idk about how well the PLs and DMPLs are doing on ebay, I don`t check too often, but personally I would steer clear of them unless You can pick them up for a good price. I`d like to pick up some pucks that are ungraded.....those big holders (especially NGC`s) are the clods of the slab world.
I’m not a condition rarity collector. I don’t believe huge premiums for condition rarity will last – others will disagree.
Will collectors want a nice one of each, or just the -Ps? My logic suggests just the -Ps, even though some of the shiny bullion is really pretty: thinking of Hood and Olympic especially. IMHO the overwhelming majority of collectors won't pick and choose (this one in bullion, and that one in collector). Oh, I kinda like the NGCs...hu-mun-go, yes, but you can see the edge, and it's easier to pass around to novices (and their spouses) without getting smudges where you're looking. I think the series is a great way to get people into modern commems...
The hood's are now running about $275 on the bay, which is slightly higher than the yosemite's at about $270. I'm not sure why the grand canyons are selling for about $300. The hot springs and yellowstones are still demanding the highest premium at about $320. With the latest drop in silver, they all may drop a little.
I like the lower mintage P's and at this point that's all I'm collecting by ordering from the mint and keeping them in opg.
If/when the series catches on, prices should go much higher for the 2010's. Even so, I'm watching the ultra low sales for the 2011 P's and will order extras if they remain low if/when a last chance is offered.
You might be right about price evaluations for the 2011 hockey pucks. I'm not as confident as you but I do own all of them. It was nice to pay just $204.95 for the last three but I jumped in at $229.95 for the first two of 2011. It makes you wonder if the 2010 pucks will decrease in value despite the sales price of $279.95.
If the Mint decreased the price of these by $5 to $199.95, they would sell a lot more and perhaps sell out. TC
Here's the sales figures, as of yesterday, for the 2011 blasted pucks: Gettysburg -- 20,000 Glacier -- 17,000 Olympic -- 15,000 Vicksburg -- 15,000 Chickasaw -- 12,000 That's pathetic, given the 35,000 maximum for each coin. If I was the Mint, I would surely be trying to do something to boost sales. As TC said, lowering prices somewhat would seem to be a no-brainer.
I know this may raise some ire, but the mint should restrict some pucks. I think a 9,999 or a 14,999 mintage would make everyone take notice of this series. As for me, I have been considering one bullion piece, but now I'm waiting for the 2012s and see if they reduce the price and the mintage to 25,000. Could this logic make one of 2011s key? (I'll be watching) Or the limited edition could be a special proof/bullion set.
I just did a quick search of Australian 5oz silver, and it looks to me like you'd be hard pressed to find anything nice for $204.95. Most of it is $300 and then on up. So while I'd like to have plenty of time to pick up a few more ATBs, IMHO the U.S. market for these will far outpace the demand for Aussie pucks in the near future. Oh yeah, and... 2011 pucks still available, for $204.95 each
