I love gold, and I want some bars and rounds. Problem is I can't afford pure gold.

Did they make any gold coins or bars out of 10,14 or 18k gold? Price would be lower and it would still look like gold.

So you want a coin just because it looks like gold why not just get gold clad coins?

I don't know about 10kt and 14kt...but old circulating gold US coins are 22kt (90% gold, 10% copper) and AGEs are about 22kt (91% gold, 9% silver).

Like others said, look at 2 peso coins or similar. Or just buy silver and some day trade up a bunch of them for some gold. You are a young guy, plenty of time to get into gold later.

10, 14 and 18 k gold does not look like 22k gold, I am not experienced with gold coins but in women's jewelery the difference between a 22k piece and 21k piece is noticeable, if you go down to 18k the difference is quite big, at 10k I am not sure if it is still looks like gold.

It actually comes down to the Alloy and what is your definition of gold should be

We discussed it before but here are 3 different coins take a guess and what their purity is:

    [IMG] britannia87.jpg britannia2002.jpg

First Coin is 14k Gold/Silver, Britannia is always 22k: Picture on left is 22 parts Gold and 2 parts Copper vs 22 parts Gold and 2 parts Silver.

I am not sure really, as I explained my very limited experience is with jewelery only and it is standard here, 22K really really shines with a more yellowish color, 21K is less shiny, 18k is pale, 14k is almost white.

with coins that may be different but still I would think that a 22k coin would look more like gold than a 14k one.

Thanks for the info that you are going to give us in your next reply :hail:.

Thing is for the 14k coin, can you get those close to melt, or are they worth much more?

From a bullion perspective, you will be paying for the gold in the coin no matter what the purity. What you have to look out for is that with low quality coins, your cost for the gold can be far far higher than sticking to bullion coins. Purchase coins made from coin gold (AGE, Krugerrand, Soverign) or pure gold (Panda, Maple, Buffalo, etc) or pure bars.

A bigger issue is selling. You might take a bad hit when the time comes to get your money back.

You love gold. Gold is expensive. But you can't afford it.

    Such is life.

Now now..just where would we be if we constrained ourselves to buying what we could afford???

You need to think out of the box more, man.

I find that if I think out side of the box, I get into deep water. I think it's safer inside the box.:D

Depends on the coin but yea you can get those close to spot price but they are harder to find since very few are issued so you may to hunt for them in the 'bay. RCM has a few 14k issues' like $75 Dollar seasonal maple leaf coins.
As mentioned by others get some $$ no point in rushing into gold especially at the current price levels.

For 22k Jewelry what you are referring is gold alloyed with Silver,Copper and Zinc. But when it comes to coins for 22k you typically have Gold and Copper giving you the reddish tint .
