recently bought a few Canadian cougar and bears, and when I got home i noticed that each coin has one scratch on them.... will this make my coins drop in value?
Any scratch or ding can reduce the value of a coin. The location and severity of the blemish plays importantly to it's value. The more obvious the blem, the less valuable the coin. Scratches in the field of the coin are the worst because they are the most obvious. In this particular case a scratch on the obverse will most likely detract less than if it were on the reverse similar to the 50 State and National Parks quarters.
Numismatic value? YES! I may not have much knowledge compare to experts in this forum but your question can logically be answered. Just think of coin grading. Higher grades are more valuable compare to those graded less. @Guano MS70 Canadian cougar is more valuable than those graded less. And both have the same composition. Although I've learned that proof is not a grade but a type of coin. The grades are all based on eye appeal, quality of luster, etc and the presence and absence of what the OP is asking. Nowadays, IMO, I think that kind of coin you're inquiring about, if a scratch will drop its value, should be graded. That's the only way you'll know for sure how much your coin is worth. You can compare prices then if you have that coin graded.
The thread starter never said what he paid for the coin, my very educated guess would only be a few dollars over spot, the coin was more than likely sold as bullion and will always be just bullion....If he paid for a MS70 coin and found scratches he got ripped off.....If he can see a scratch it would be dumb to have it graded.
6 dollars over spot each coin. the coins look perfect except one little scratch. bought it at a loco coins shop in london, ontario, canada. they sell all the wildlife for 6 dollar over spot, and most of them are perfect condition. me and my bother bought 8 of them and 3 of them had a little scratch on it....very disappointed. I'm gonna try to go back there tomorrow and exchange it for a perfect one.
I would not worry too much about a small scratch as you describe. Minor imperfections are common in these bullion coins especially the Canadian issues. The vast majority grade MS69 or less by PCGS or NGC because of it. Your chances of finding an absolute perfect MS70 coin are low. I try to find the best looking ones I can and will not buy any with imperfections that significantly detract from the coin (e.g., fingerprint, gouge, etc.). The minor flaws are almost inevitable. With that being said, if you are unhappy with it try to exchange it. Minor flaws can get more unappealing over time if you are unhappy with it and focused on it. TC
i think it would be less then ms69, it looks like someone toke a needle and scratched it about half a centimeter right next to the cougars face.
Only to those collectors willing to hand over the extra money for the coin. To me, it's still bullion and I don't pay premium prices on such things, not when I can likely pick up one slightly above spot and it looks just as good.
I see. Sorry. I really am a noob. 'Hope I can find MS70 1986 ASE slabbed NGC or PCGS that is slightly just above spot, + the amount paid for grading.
