haha yeah - Unfortunatly if it is not found it will likely get melted down :( Hopefully they can save it as it would be a shame to lose that history.

What melting company accepts 3 million in gold with no questions asked?

If you take in the built in market %age, the refinery, the taxes. they could lie their way till they were convinced that 750 thousand was a fair price.

That's a 100% inside job. "For some reason the alarms didn't work" "The doors were not broken into" ?

There are criminal groups that have jewelery store connections anyone who pulled it off could easily flip it with them for cash.

I'm having trouble loading the video - anyone have a text link to the story? Why were $3m of gold coins in a courthouse anyway?

Didn't you see the "Italian Job"? You don't just drop the whole load onto a dealer or person willing to melt it. You bring in small amounts at a time or spread it out so it's not as suspicious.

It was a display of gold reflecting the gold mining heritage of the area and included nuggets, gold dust and ore samples. I did not see any coins in the display. Unless my math is incorrect, $3,000,000.00 would equate to around 140 pounds of gold. There was nowhere near that amount in the display.

You don't understand. I live only a couple counties away (Shasta). It's not like that around here. You don't see a lot of theft and things like that. It's really sad. I hate to see such greed take over small towns. And the saddest thing is, it's not about the money, that was a land mark.

I actually saw that on the local news tonight. Very upsetting indeed.

Not in that town, or anywhere near it dude. This part of Norther California, we don't have organized crime, or anything close. At least not as far as I'm aware. Most thefts around here, honestly, are just committed by stupid Meth junkies looking for their next fix. Even those are few and far between.
