I'm thinking of buying a few of these silver Polar Bear coins that came out the other day. (a few because there's a 3/household limit) http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/20-pure-silver-commemorative-coin-polar-bear-2012-prod1230021 Has anyone bought one of these yet? Opinions? I think there's approx $8 worth of silver in it, by todays spot price, but it has a face value of $20! And it's selling for... $20. I think it's the 3rd coin in a series like this. I heard the previous ones sell out in about a month, and they're already going for $25-$30. 250,000 produced. I'm definitely going to get some of these. Just wondering if anyone else had yet, or if anyone had bought the previous two offerings.
That is a nice coin. I primarily only collect U.S. Coins but I may have to budge and grab one of these. Plus I love Polar Bears.
I agree with you, rodeo. I have been looking at the coin and like it also. My issue is I don't know if I want to spend $80.00 an ounce for silver. I think if I lived in Canada or travelled there frequently I might be more likely to, as I know I could be guaranteed a return of what I paid for it. Anyway, I like the coin a lot.
I was gonna just pick up one of them but with $12.99 shipping to where I'm at, I'm gonna pick up 2 now to make it a little more worth it. I guess being a collector, the return investment doesn't matter to me as much.
Yea, the shipping to US, is pretty brutal. Luckily I have family in Canada, and I get up there every couple months. Think I might get my girlfriend to order 3 as well. I may do well to offer singles on ebay for people in the US that want just one without having to pay an extra $13 to get it! Definitely like the fact that it has a $20 face value. Can't beat it.
2 ordered and hopefully on their way. What's the actual spec's on these? I can't seem to find it on the RM website, only states it's .999 silver, etc. Edit: Nevermind, found it.
If you get your order over $70 then they will ship for free if you have the coupon code. I used 'geodec11', and threw in a 1/2 oz dragon to get over the top. These coins are not practical for pure silver per dollar value, however they are the 3rd in a series, and the previous coins in the series do have growing premiums. You won't find the canoes for less than $30, and the first in the series is going for $35 or more.
I'm going to definitely get 3 of these. If these ones end up appreciating as much as the previous 2 then selling 2 of them on eBay should almost cover the cost of the one ill keep formyself. I really wish I picked up some of the canoe design ones. Those are nice.
I had tried the geodec11 code the other day, but it had no effect. Does the order have to be over $70 to work. And will that code work for shipping to the US?
It does have to be over $70, and it does work for shipping to the US. If you call them directly they might give you some leeway on the $70.
I'm definitely going to get me one of these I also have the canoe. You mentioned there was a coin prior to the canoe. I didn't realize these coins were part of a series. What came out before the canoe? Nevermind I forgot about the maple leaf coin that I bought. I'm assuming that is the first of the series. If not let me know
Im considering getting a few of these. I just obligated myself to the series since I picked up the timber wolf. Boy are those expensive too!
Are you talking about the 1 oz bullion coin series? If so those are a different series. These coins are not 1 oz coins.
The Timber wolf is part of their wild life series. It's a 3 year series, running from 2011-2013, I believe. There will be 2 coins released each year for a total of 6. The ones that are out so far are the Grizzly and the Timber Wolf for 2011, and the Cougar for 2012. This polar bear coin is not part of the same series.
Here's a link to a picture of the first coin of the series, which is a maple leaf theme. The second coin is the canoe and the current coin is the polar bear. http://www.silvercoinstoday.com/canadian-mint-offers-2011-silver-20-coin-at-face-value/103814/
