can get the certified coins at the right price, you will probably be less likely to make money on a spot price increase. Premiums vary greatly with certified gold.
I used to use a personal benchmark comparison of $150. If I could get a common date MS61 $20 Liberty for $150 greater than the spot price for 1 ounce of gold, it was a buy as a bullion substitute.
Now you can get MS62s or MS63s for that price point, maybe not CAC, but good for grade nonetheless. I was talking to a coin dealer who was offering an MS64 $20 Lib. for $2100 and a better date that sheets for $2500 for the same price. There is just a lot of material coming out of Europe and out of the woodwork in the U.S.. I don't think premiums could go much lower. Type US gold melts for 3.5% under an oz per $20; Eagles are available for around 3.8% over spot. It costs around $25 a coin to get certified plus shipping and all the other rigamarole. You basically have to get an MS64 to make any money, and you will lose money on no grades big time. Then you have to wait for a surge in bullion price to get your money out of the NG coin.
I've been thinking a lot about this. Lib, Saint, or AGE. Or a pretty $10 Indian. If 2011 $50 AGE does turn out to be the key, that might have made for a great short term potential. But I'm not much of a flipper, and I know I'd prefer to look at a pre-1933 more than bullion. I really wish I had been looking in 2009...at a UHR  If the gold-silver ratio falls back anything like the low of last year, I'll want to have decided!
All this points out what I was thinking - that generic gold is hardly worth slabbing. I have a number of low Ms $20 and $10 liberyts. I'll keep the membership, grading and shipping fees in my pocket (maybe.to buy more gold instead of plastic ).
"Unless you can get the certified coins at the right price, you will probably be less likely to make money on a spot price increase. Premiums vary greatly with certified gold." I've been shopping for a $5 gold Indian for awhile, certified, AU. It's tough, if you care about what you pay, let alone looking for a "better date". But I would not buy classic gold that wasn't certified. It's not worth the savings over raw--wait 'til you send a couple to PCGS, get back one labeled as cleaned, & the other, I forget the term, oh yes, "bodybagged". Their grading can be "whimsical" at times. Lately I've started buying some of the "modern" US $5 gold commems. Pretty coins, usually available for around the melt price or even a little less. I haven't checked the price of gold sovereigns lately, I love those too.....
I agree with those points. I bought a $2 1/ Lib. mid-year in 2011 from a half-decent dealer a bit of an operator, fast-talker,bs-er, etc.. I sent the coin out to grading, it had a residue so ran it through NCS. Came back "altered surfaces" though he had sold it as a good (AU 58?). I brought it to his attention and he was completely arrogant about it blaming me for the whole thing. I went over his head explaining what happened to the show manager, he said though he sympathized, he couldn't do anything. He isn't an ANA member in good standing when I checked. Be careful who you buy from. Type gold exists in huge quantities, most of those coins are not worth much of a premium.
IMO bargain hunting unslabbed coins is the way to go, you are buying them at spot price so you have little to lose. Just make sure you do your home work and verify it is legit.
But if you buy $2 1/2 pieces raw for over $300 when melt is around $200 you will be a loser. None of the big buyers are paying much for problem gold.
I disagree. There are reasons to slab common dates. First of all, slabbing lends authority to a coin being MS instead of AU. Someday my kids will be selling the coin and this minimizes some shady dealer from undervaluing the coin on that account. Second, a common date is still a large dollar purchase and authenticating the coin in an age of counterfeiting is worth something. Third, many gold buyers won't buy raw gold, so slabbing increases the number of potential buyers. Fourth, many buyers pay more for slabbed gold over raw.
That is all true. I have sent uncertified $20s to a major wholesaler. A few of the coins were cleaned, so the company assumed guilt by association--they were all worth the problem coin price instead of the XF/AU price. And those premiums have varied from a little over spot to 20% or more especially for the gold dollars up to the $5 Indians. It is a lot harder for the buyer to say the coin is damaged, cleaned, or altered surfaces if the coin is in a holder. But these days a problem gold coin is worth around the metal price at Heritage, Rarcoa and Spectrum--they may give you a few percent over melt if you are lucky.
As i said unless it is available at a small premium over spot i would not buy them. I would not so many yes there are some but gold is gold and you can easily weight a gold coin to check whether it is legit (with silver it is another story). In fact it is harder IMO to verify slabbed coins simply because of how many fake slabs are hitting the markets these days, how are you going to verify it is legit without sending it back to TPG or breaking the slab?
And if you buy raw $2 1/2 Indians at shows for around $300 thinking that they "look" mintstate, good luck. I have tried doing that too. Grading fee--around $25. AU58 value? $280-$300.
Probably a lot smarter. The elusive MS $1 to $5 gold is not worth the risk usually unless you can buy it right. The coin dealers are usually several steps ahead of their customer. "This piece is AU58 all day long--looks MS but the TPGs will never give it an MS grade. Let's wait for someone to come along who thinks it will MS and tell him it might. There's no telling, the TPGs are all over the map. I sure have seen coins like that in MS 65 holders!" What they will not tell you is all the reasons it is not a good bet.
Howdy, I'm not sure how to link a pdf, but here our local Liberty Coin's website http://www.libertycoinservice.com/ On the right side, click on the Daily Quotes. They give all the various bullion prices, but also the percentage premium for each. When buying older bullion, I'd probably always go with slabbed for cloud's reasons. It's why I like to collect AU stuff because it's easier for me to grade and not have to worry about doctored BU coins. Anything older than I am in BU I want slabbed. peace, rono
I have been looking for a 2.50 indian piece for a long time.. but I am really not to comfortable buying a raw coin and I can not find any slabbed indians near spot.. So I just end up buying raw 1/10 age for slightly over spot..
