If you had the chance to purchase a 2012 Britannia for $38.95 or a 2012 Kookaburra for $40.99, what would be your pleasure? Mintage for the 2011 Britannia was 100,000. The 2012 mintage is unknown. Mintage for the 2012 Kook is a maximum 500,000. I'm thinking the Brit has a better appreciation potential, but I know the Kooks have been selling out in recent years also.

I personally couldn't choose just one as I collect them both and they are both extremely well made. I think I read somewhere that this year's Brittania isn't going to have a mintage limit either if that matters to you. If I absolutely had to choose based on aesthetics I'd probably opt for the Britannia.

  4. Why not buy both? If I had to choose, I would go with the Britannia and pocket the $2.04 for another day. I find the lower mintage Britannia series to be undervalued compared to other higher mintage comparable series. Even if they do raise the mintage limits this year, it will likely still be less than the Kooks. Do not forget the Koala. :smile. TC

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go for the Kook. It's just more appealing to me.

I'm glad you brought that up, TC. I looked at the 2012 Koala, but the design is not that appealing to me. It looks like it is part porcupine. I know there is a potential low mintage issue. Anyway, they can be had for $40.99 also.

I ordered my 2012 Britannia last week. They have that Walking Liberty look to them that I like.

I will go for Britannia i like the overall design and i think it is superior to Kook and also imo it has better international recognition that Kookaburu.

Kookaburras are more attractive and higher purity.

I like the idea of buying both also. Have you given a look at the Australian Silver Kangaroo Series that began in 1993? 1 oz. .999 Silver. Small, small mintages. Big, big prices.

I went with both, but have more of the kooks. I just like Perth Mint, personal preference. Britannias are sterling silver with a full oz of pure silver so they do have more metal value per coin, but I prefer purity.

    TC,

I took your advice and purchased a koala for the heck of it. It is actually a great-looking coin. I want more now once they are in stock at Provident Metals. I have some 2012 Britannias now also. No kooks yet; the premium on those things is more than either the Britannia or the koala. I don't understand why.

How's this sub-collection going, Tree? I keep seeing kooks and keep holding back, but i keep picking up the Brits. I have one of each type (MS only), except 2007 ($$). Maybe it's a mix of preferring images of Brit over birds, plus the historical interest in GB...gee, not very numis of me!

I think this maybe the last year the Britannia is going to be minted in sterling so that may add to collectibility later on as I read something about the royal mint switching to .999 silver instead. Also I prefer the design of the Britannia.

Oh, I also didn't pick up the 2011, as I'm not a rah-rah GB guy, and the Union Jack field doesn't resonate with me. Plus, I figure that one won't be difficult to pick up later, AND it's not the uber-cool RP finish. However, if I saw one at a LCS for +5 or less, I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

:hail: I would go for the Brittania, but my personal favorite is the Mexican Onza.

    Hey Clint,

I have both the Britannia and Kookaburra now, but only in the designs I really like. So, in the Britannia I have the 1999 (the chariot is my fave of all of them), a number of the 2009 BU, a 2009 proof and a couple of the 2012. The others don't do much for me, but I would like a 2007 at the right price, as I like the lion.

In Kookaburras, I have only the 2011 and the 2012. The 2011 is by far my favorite design of all of them, but I bought a 2012 in a moment of weakness.

I like the Mexican Libertad and Onza also, as Ripley said, but I especially like bullion coins that have a different reverse every year.

There are a good number of enjoyable world bullion coins out there and it's interesting to see the new designs each year.

The 2013 kookaburra is a very appealing coin. Can't wait to get a few once price drops a little.

Since I am a collector of both British and Australian coins, both!
