Sorry for the delay, Schnauz...I had to go out and get my eyes checked after seeing this week's sales report!! Silver Proof set sales as of 10 January, 2012... 2010 Silver Proof Set sales total: 585,414* * Sold Out 2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 1,782 for a total of 544,230 That's only a third of last weeks sales!! I know the holidays are over...but that's a HUGE drop in sales...from 4,573!! The People have spoken...they want the Silver Proof sets to drop in price like other silver products from the Mint. It'll be interesting to see next week's sales figures...to see how the newly released 2012 Silver Proof Quarter sets do at the same $41.95/set. A new release should do quite well, but if the Numismatic public is expecting a price reduction...they will be sorely disappointed! :so-sad: The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set was/is 2010 (585,414). The average weekly sales figures for 2011 sets needed by the end of February 2011 (7 weeks left? *) to equal that mintage are... 2011 Silver Proof Set: (585,414 – 544,230) / 7 = 5,883 * Who knows?...this is just a guess based on the vague information we get from the US Mint web site...it could be longer.
We don't know yet. Maybe at the end of February. Maybe sooner, maybe later. Is all dependent on when they sell out. And we don't know how many were made. The Mint is very vague about some things. Everything seems to be a secret and unexpected surprises are the norm. Kinda reminds me of an old girlfriend I had a few years ago. Anyway, at this point in time, (her name was Carrie) we do know that there have been 41,184 more of the 2010 Silver Proof Sets sold, than the 2011 Silver Proof Sets. Of course that number gets smaller each and every week. So now, we're just in the "Wait and See" mode. Yakpoo posts a weekly mint sales report on this thread usually on Tuesdays or Wednesday with full color commentary, up to date facts and an endless array of interesting photos. So if you want to know anything about the 2010 or 2011 Silver Proof Sets, this is the place to be.
Just picked up another three sets for $3 under melt each and another for $3 over. Ebay is my new best friend for silver proof sets.
As I sit in a dimly lit room...with the soft glow of the computer screen gently dancing across the mirrored surfaces of my 2011 Silver Proof set, I wonder...what will Tuesday's sales report portend? Hmmmmm...... I'm also wondering...why couldn't they have put a 95% copper cent in these sets like they did in 2009?
Because 2009 was the Lincoln Bicentennial year of the penny, and they were promoting it when ever they could. They even had a special four penny design set, exclusive for that year. So this doesn't surprise me they added the coin.
Gee Yakpoo, just seen the photo of you sitting in front of your computer. I didn't realize you were such a youngster! How did you get so much knowlege at such a young age? Anyway, yes, looking forward to the numbers tomorrow. I was thinking, just for the heck of it, I would make a guess as to how many of the 2011's were sold this past week. I'm going to say 983. No reason. Just got a feeling. We'll see. If these weekly sales numbers keep dropping, it may take some serious time before they're sold out. I'm sure the mint is not going to wait until these 2011's are sold out before they make the 2012's available. So we may have another overlap in sales again. But of course, it's still a matter of just how many of the 2011's they actually made. After last weeks numbers, there was a 41,184 sets sold difference in the 2010 and the 2011 sales figures with the 2011 being the lesser of the two. So at this point in time, it's anybodys guess. Maybe when Yakpoo files his report tomorrow, his commentary and "YAKFACTS" will make the whole scheme of things a little more clearer.
They didn't wait for the 2011 Silver Quarters Prof Set to sell out before releasing the 2012 set. They are currently selling both sets. So I don't expect them to cut off the 2011 Silver Proof Set sales early (not before a sell out), and I don't think they'll wait for the sell out of 2011 before releasing the full 2012 Silver Proof Set.
There is no way to tell when they will cut off sales of the prior year's set. They will sell them until the current inventory on hand in the fulfillment center is exhausted. There is really no way to guess what they might have on hand based on prior years given what the price of silver went through in 2011 and the fact that orders were suspended at least once because of it. I'd say there is an extremely high probability these are build to plan and not build to order, and thus, might have gotten thrown off by the fact that silver dropped from close to $50/ounce to where it is today during 2011.
Uhhhh...........I just had a horrible thought. Do to the fact that this past Monday was a holiday, the mint stats might be delayed 1 day. So they may not be available to Yakpoo until tomorrow. I guess we'll just have to wait.
I'm extremely confused here...I went on google to look up a list of mintages for the silver proof sets to give my Dad to show him 2010 is the key date now...but I came across some information that concerns me.. taken from http://proofsetguide.com/proof-set-mintage/ Silver Proof Set Mintage 1976 3,998,621 1992 1,009,586 1993 570,213 1994 636,009 1995 549,878 1996 623,655 1997 605,473 1998 638,134 1999 804,565 2000 965,421 2001 889,697 2002 892,229 2003 1,125,755 2004 1,175,934 2005 1,069,679 2006 1,054,008 2007 875,050 2008 763,887 2009 694,406 2010 (585,414) ADDED 2011 TBD and taken from http://silverproofset.net/mintages Date Mintage 1992 1,009,586 1993 570,213 1994 636,009 1995 549,878 1996 623,655 1997 605,473 1998 638,134 1999 804,565 2000 965,421 2001 889,697 2002 892,229 2003 1,125,755 2004 1,175,934 2005 1,069,679 2006 1,054,008 2007 875,050 2008 763,887 2009 694,406 2010 (585,414) ADDED something doesn't seem right here...I don't see how 2010 is the new key date....either those sites are wrong or yakpoo made a mistake...
This thread is long but if you go back you will see how I have already answered this concern. Basically, the numbers you cite do not include the silver premier proof sets. Go by Yakpoo's numbers...he is correct. TC
LOL. Yeah me too. Oh, he'll have them out to us once the info is available to him. I got a feeling he's been tracking Silver Proof Set mintages for a number of years now. And probably many other mint products as well, which takes some work and research. But I'm sure he's having alot of fun doing it at the same time. He should start his own business tracking numbers and providing that service to others. He could call his service "YAKTRACKS". The information he uncovered would be called "YAKFACTS".
Well...the "YAKFACT" for today is...0 That's right Boys and Girls...0...the big goose egg. Total 2011 Silver Proof set sales last week...544,230 Total 2011 Silver Proof set sales this week...544,230 The Mint still shows these products for sale...so how come no one is buying them? (inquiring minds need to know!) I'm sorry...I can't go on...I need a nap! :zzzzzz: Btw...an interesting "YAKFACT" is that last year's Silver Proof Quarter sets went on sale 26Apr2011...a full three (3) months AFTER the 2011 Silver Proof sets went on sale (which, incidentally, also carry the Silver Proof quarters). Even still...the first week's 2011 Silver Proof Quarter set sales were 78,054 when sold separately. The first week's sales figures are out for the 2012 Silver Proof quarters which, incidentally, went on sale BEFORE the 2012 Silver Proof set. The first week's sales numbers are only...61,181...(unbelievable!!). The collecting public must really think the prices should fall sometime soon.
