FWIW I've used APMEX many times and I've found the simplest was is to pay by check. Then I use my bank and make a online payment to APMEX. It usually takes 10 days or so but I'm saving the CC fee and its pretty hassle free. Easier than using a wire transfer. I also usually check the prices at my local coin shop. And if the prices are close and they have what I want its worth going in person. No shipping costs and I get some face time in front of a local dealer which I'm hoping will pay off down the line.
I had only one incident with Paradise Mint, over the years I bought from them, and Google got involved and settled with me. For a few years we didn't do business together, but time has healed the wounds and we started up again. Danrs' coin alert on the Army's Commemorative, uncirculater half dollar was the start. My problem is I don't buy in bulk and I'm already at the percentage of PM recommended by my investment advisor. So I only pick up yearly issues or new designs I like as collectables. Smaller companies seemed to be geared toward this (Paradise Mint) rather than the larger distributors (APMEX).
Well, I checked today and it's said it's completed and shipped. I would have called but never had the time to, email is much easier for me since I can multitask at work, being in front of a computer all day. I figured the holidays would have slowed them down a bit but not by 9 or 10 days. I'm usually pretty patient too, I just got worried that it was in the same status for such a long period.
I've bought from APMEX and I wouldn't say they make you jump through hoops or have roadblocks per se but what may be a turn off for some is that you need to have a minimum order of $50 to be able to buy from them. For me that is a problem because I don't have many other friends that are coin collectors. The 2 coin collecting friends that I do have don't always buy when I do so if I'm buying a single silver bullion coin then it's less then $50, usually, so that means I can't buy at APMEX. Also shipping of $12.95 seems way excessive to me. I've bought from many other dealers who charge anywhere from $3 to $6 and the coin(s) are shipped insured and securely. So unless I'm buying multiple coins and with friends to split the cost of shipping I probably wouldn't buy very often from APMEX. That being said I have not bought from Paradise Mint either so I look forward to hearing about your experience purchasing from them
overall it seems that paradise is good for a couple rolls of sae's or mod commems and such- apmex is better for the big orders. the free shipping is a major plus with paradise
Call me crazy, but this doesn't seem like rocket science to me. Straight from the APMEX website. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are the U.S. shipping, handling and insurance charges? $12.95 (USD) for orders of $50.00 - $249.99 (USD) $19.95 (USD) for orders of $250.00 - $999.99 (USD) $24.95 (USD) for orders of $1000.00 - $24999.99 (USD) Free for orders of $25,000 (USD) and over What form of payment does American Precious Metals Exchange accept? Payment to APMEX must be provided using: • Credit card (Domestic Orders Only) • Bank Wire • Certified check • Cashier’s check • Money order • Personal check. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you send them a personal check, there are no other charges. Just write the check, stick it in an envelope and place in a mailbox. They don't require a bank wire unless you are into really big money. I say that if this is too difficult, then you ought not be purchasing bullion anyway.
yea- that is the page I was looking for(there is no "shipping" link on their front page and shipping is not listed next to item as it is on paradise -free-)- the wire transfer sounded like a hassle and the check sounded like it took a while- I used a cc at paradise and got my order in less than a week and it cost less. the shipping cost are right there by the item (free!)--btw you may be bit crazy if you are paying that high shipping to get products at a higher price
I didn't see where Paradise had any decent gold for sale, so this isn't an issue for me. I don't buy much silver. I was only commenting that you said APMEX had significant roadblocks and hurdles to cross in order to purchase from them. This appears to be more of an issue of your personal preferences.
To bad like none of these sites ship to Canada. =( If anyone knows a site which you can buy cheap US coins on and ships to Canada without these outrages shipping prices it would be really great. Also Ampex requires 250 dollars and I don't usually buy a bunch of coins which add up to 250.
