If your plan is to sell them...I would not, I would sell them sealed. If you want to keep them and want them raw open it. If you want them slabbed, don't open it and send them in.

Well Guys. Here I am in Orlando at FUN. I took two 25th sets with me to sell at the show, but on day one, only one set accompanied me. I took an offering of $625 for that one set. Tells ya something.....

Hey, I made my money on this one. Talk about a guy who "stepped in it". You folks may want to hold on to your sets as I do believe they will become more valuable down the road. Me? I'm happy for the return I got. Picked up a splendid Roanoke classic commem and something especially nice from the Penney Lady. I'm goin' in tomorrow to sell the other set and forage for more Classic Commem's......

 

People who can't win a discussion always retaliate with an insult. It's the manly way to save face. I prefer to call it a draw or " to each is own" without interjecting personal remarks.

 

I think its a great time to be picking those up Green. Nice quiet series, get to have time to pick just the coins you want, good idea. Those were red hot in the 80's, they will be again I guarantee it. If I were buying US, that series would be at the top of my series I would be looking at. Plus, they are just so dang interesting, much more interesting than just a different mintmark on a coin you have 50 of already.

 

Totally agree Chris. The thing with the "classic" issues is that more and more of the "modern" guys are getting into them....mostly folks that collect the modern series of commems and who are looking to expand out. Me? I'm the guy who has lusted after the "classic" series ever since I was a young boy. It's only been recently that I've been able to fulfill a dream of owning a few. The series was "hot' in the eighties (as you dully noted) and I believe things will be heating up again real soon (if not now).........

 

If you're seriously considering selling them, there are two buyers over at CU offering $700/set cash for sealed sets. No Ebay fees, no PayPal fees, no hassle.

MCM is now selling the 25th Anniversary set for $725. This is the full retail purchase with credit card price from a vendor with an impeccable reputation for customer service. Ebay prices and elsewhere should be lower than this because I'd say ~$700 is the new top. They also have some sort of facebook contest going on where you can get a free set. I don't know the terms as I don't trust facebook and don't use it.

IMO, this tells me the vendors might have overbought on these sets and are looking to unload some before prices drop even lower. They know when it's time to cut and run.

 

Ummm yeah nothing like a set with a mintage of 100,000 to be "overstocked" on. I really boubt anyone is having a hard time getting rid of these... Even dropping their pants @ $700 per set is netting them like a $300 profit per set considering the probably bought most of them for $425~ or so.

 

I said top for buyers, not sellers. I suspect that sellers will get substantially less than this.

 

So explain the dealers offering $700+ per set for sealed sets?

MCM are also out of stock on ALL ASE sets according to their website.

 

I agree with fatima's point that the hype around here was getting overheated. However, your point about MCM being out of stock and therefor their prices as comparisons are invalid. Is there any major dealers with these sets in stock that someone knows what they are asking for these sets?

 

Apmex are asking $995 (LOL) and I think they'll be sitting on those for a while. A Google search turned up one dealer selling at $775, other than that you're back to Ebay. The 5 lowest BINs there (inc. shipping, all open sets) are $695.00, $695.00, $701.40, $709.00 and $709.98

 

FYI APMEX only has 3 sets @ $995 each so i'll guess unless they get more they will bo sold out soon enough too... They also have...
51 PCGS MS/PF70 FS sets @ $2k each ...
28 PCGS MS/PF69 sets FS @ $1400 each
2 PCGS MS/PF69 FS Autographed sets @ $1000 each
12 PCGS MS/PF69 FS standard label sets @ $1300 each

Personally i'm somewhat shocked that they show 51 PCGS MS/PF70 sets in stock... Personally I do think PCGS was giving preferential treatment to the big dealers but what do I know...

Anyway looks like APMEX has about 100 sets all together... We will see just how long they last I guess...

One of Amazon's vendors has them for $725. They are coming down, fast.

 

I wasn't disputing that they may have been in stock when you made your post, but the fact that they are now out of stock would seem to suggest that they sold all that they had at $739 each. What does that say about demand at the $739 price level (almost 150% over issue price)?

The lows on Ebay for opened sets were hit a week or so before Christmas in the high $500s to low $600s. Most are now going at/around the $700 level with a few fliers in each direction. Hopefully Steven will post updated charts soon as a picture is worth a thousand words.

The question remains: if $700 represents a top for buyers and most sellers will get substantially less than that, then why are multiple dealers offering $700 per set for sealed sets?

One of them is Mitch at WonderCoins, the other has been offering $700/set for sealed sets for several weeks and is still looking for more. I'll call MCM tomorrow (they're closed now) and see what their buy price is.
