Ok so getting back into this after my house was broken into 6 months ago and I lost my entire collection..

But anyways just sold my new truck.. paid off all my debt entirely bought a pos truck and still have money to play with.. in the past week I have purchased a few silver 1 oz bars but would like bigger.. but it seems like the 5 or ten ounce bars seem to have more premium over melt than the 1 oz bars.. am I just looking at the wrong places?? I can only buy one ten ounce a month or two 5 or ten 1 oz.. so im not ablest to buy in bulk.. am located in Rhode island and only have one coin shop around who only has a few one oz bars.. not a big fan of ebay.. anyone local know of a good place??

Also I love the old pour style bars but am leafy of buying because they seem like they would be easy to counterfeit.. no def shape or size and only have a simple stamp.. the englehard bars on ebay sell for a huge percentage over spot.. im guessing thus is more due to collected value than just pure silver weight??

Thanks for anyone who can lend a helping hand to a young newbie!!

Is there reason you are looking to buy bars why not stack silver coins? You can buy 5 Oz ATB for small premium over spot, Kitco has them listed at 186.

If you're looking for just investment type silver, I'd go to APMEX and look. You can buy rounds and older bullion for just a few dollars over spot.

While APMEX has good prices on the stuff I never could buy from them due to high shipping costs.
Auburn is south of Worcester. It's an hour or so distance from N.H./MA border or Plaistow/Haverhill area.

If you plan to diversify a lot of $$ into silver you would need to spend a lot of money in safety boxes, best bet is to go with ETF or also diversify into Gold. I typically follow the 80-20 ratio when it comes Gold to Silver.

    Opinion not necessarilyt advice.

Sorry about the break in. My 1982 apt burglery left me with out my coin and note collection. I was divestated. It took me years to get over. I use a safety deposit box now. I realize that a safety deposit box may not be perfect, but its better than home (in my opinion). I live in the country. It would be too easy for some one to show up and load up. I really do not want to have a reason to shoot someone. Many associates of mine, including a few relatives, know how much I like coins. I also make sure these same folks know that I don't keep the stuff on hand. Between safety deposit box stops, I use a home safe. With the current spot prices, it does not take long to have a small treasure in the safe.

Personally, I only use the Sprott brand ETF for silver and gold. I like CEF also, but don't have this holding currently.

BTW, my smaller boxes, which are heavy enough when filled are $5.00 a year (3x5xlength). The 5x10xlength are 25.00 a year. There is another size in between these two that cost me $8.00 a year. Shop around for a safety deposit box, there are steep differences between banks. I live in Tornado country, so I have my metals split by value between two different towns (30 miles apart).

    Welcome to CT.

Thanks.. i was depressed for months.. but gotta move on sometime.. Wow those boxes are cheap!!.. in my area the range from 60 to 100 bucks for the 5x10 box.. my bank was 80..

So apmex is crazy on shipping.. that's what I figured..

Im up in nh today trying to go snowboarding.. wonder hoe late the show is open..

Have you looked into getting renters or home insurance to cover that?

Yes I know have renters insurance after the break in..

I was thinking about a heavy ass old safe.. but I do go away alot on small trips either snowboarding in the winter or mtn biking in the summer.. also ny house is off the beaten path so if someone did get in while im gone they have plenty of time to find the safe and break into it..

After the Tornado that took out 12.5 Miles of my town on May 22nd I highly highly disapprove of any saftey deposit boxes what so ever. I had one with my life savings in silver at a local bank. It crumbled and I'm sure someone else ended up with my collection. The bank pretty much said "Sorry about your luck." They wouldn't compensate for anything. I agree with FryDaddy with a floor safe or something of that nature.
I currently use an old rugged filing cabinet. I built a frame around it and bolted it to the wall in my closet. Then I use a long thick chain that is ran through the door handles and into eyelets on the frame. It is the same concept I had before the Tornado and what was stored inside never budged. The rest of the house leveled but my frame and cabinet were still in the same spot. Now this was no ordinary tornado, it was the worst in history. Winds excess of 212 mph. I now wish I had everything stored inside it and nothing at the bank. We even had some looters in the mix while I was loading the other items I could salvage and transport them to another area. They couldn't get in.

Definitely agree with a gun safe, one stocked with items intended for it as well. Very sorry to hear about you getting robbed. One suggestion I came across once that stuck with me was building your safe into the floor of say your garage, and then building a cabinet on top of it with a hidden floor panel. So you have to unlock the cabinet to get to it, and even then maybe it's just filled with Christmas decorations to throw anyone off the trail. I would also keep some at other locations if you trust anyone enough to hold it for you, but not a bank.

If you are looking to stack, I have been eyeing GoldMart.com lately because they have ASE's and Maple Leaves for $2 over spot, and they don't appear to charge extra for credit card, assuming they take it. I don't know as I haven't bought from them before, but have heard good things.
