A couple months ago I bought a 1/2 oz silver 2012 year of the dragon coin on eBay. I paid $43 for it which I thought was a great deal at the time because I thought I was getting the 1 oz coin. A few minutes after the auction ended I noticed it was only the 1/2 oz. After I saw that I wanted to see if I could cancel the bid, but decided not to. When I received the coin in the mail I thought it was awesome and beautiful so I decided it was good that I ended up keeping it. I was just wondering what you all think the near future numismatic value of the coin will be since its value in silver won't match or exceed the price I paid for it for a long time...if at all.
Unlike the 1 oz bullion, which has a limit of 300,000, the half oz does not have a mintage limit. Having said that, this coin is currently not available from the Perth Mint. Production will resume after the Perth Mint manufactures more of this coin in 2012.
The coin is minted every 12 years, the last being in 2000. You could keep track of where the 2000 1/2 ounce dragon is selling in the auctions on ebay and get an idea of what its future value above spot might be. There is no mintage limit on this denomination, which might well be a factor in keeping the value down. It is a very attractive coin, as you have said. If you bought it because you liked the coin, you should be happy with it. If you bought it as an investment, it may not be very productive. If you still want the 1 ounce coin, Modern Coin Mart is selling it in a 69-grade for $79.00, shipping included, for 4 days, which is probably the cheapest price anywhere.
It really depends what the mintage ends up being. Just because the 1 oz is capped at 300,000 doesn't mean they will make that many. Perth makes however many they get buy orders for. The 1/2 oz could end up being less, or more potentially. For example, the 1/2 Mouse goes for $100 while you can still get the 1 oz for $50. There's no guarantee that your 1/2 oz dragon will appreciate in value, and there's no guarantee that numismatics will stay above spot like they are. However, the trend is that numismatics command greater percentage premiums as time goes on, and you can't do much better than Perth lunar for numismatics IMO. It is my favorite series after all.
Can you post a link. I went there just now, the lowest price one is $97, and NOT even graded, just the regular capsule . http://www.moderncoinmart.com/cart1/product.php?productid=24195&cat=0&page=1
The sale started early Friday morning. They must be all sold, as they have even pulled the picture of the item from the home page. Looks like they, along with a number of other items, went fast. Amazing.
I paid $99 Canadian for my 1oz dragon. I love dragons so the huge premium was somewhat justified. Last week, I called a dealer about my order for the 3-coin Proof Silver set. Sadly, I did not get it because the dealer only had a very limited number of them (only 1000 worldwide). Also, you have to be a customer of the previous issues like the rabbit and tiger to get it. I see Apmex and Gainsville selling them for quite a premium. Really want to get one, but not at those prices. Feel sad typing this now.
