anyone who would buy a 25th Anv ASE set is INSANE?

It sounded to me as if you didn't like the fellow's post and said it to mock him. No matter. Furthermore the question you asked "do you think proofs are junk?" IMO was more of the same. There is no yes or no answer to that question as it depends upon the coin. The party gave his opinion that he wanted to collect coins with history and events around them and clearly the ASE isn't one of those, proof or not. This isn't being a "purist" as you call it and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either.

 

No mocking intended whatsoever. I guess message boards are subject to misinterpretations at times. He made a point that he meant no offense with his opinion and I made the point that I took no offense to it. In fact I said it was okay if the some people will never accept a designated hitter as real baseball. I only posed the proof question because he stated that he considered only coins intended for circulation were valid for his coin collecting standard. Did he extend that to say Morgan proofs, or Franklin proofs or any other proofs not intended for circulation? I wondered if he'd thought that all the way through or if I was trying to read too much into it. Of course you're right about there not being a right or wrong answer. My opinion?....worthless, not ASE's, not designated hitters, not classics...my opinion is

I think there is many ways to analyze it. but we should not hate on those who missed out and are willing to purchase a set on the secondary market. some of us had to take a nonpaying day off to order from the mint so we may not have gotten these sets as cheap as people think. milk cost $5 but am I insane for not buying a cow instead ?

 

I'll be buying these sets for no more than 5% over melt in 5 years. When will you guys learn the basic fundamentals of collectables.

They are limited to 90 days. (Unless it has changed recently?)
How many days have these been in hand to sell?
Enough to determine there haven't been 10k on eBay already.
If you can prove such an outlandish claim, bring it.

I did a search using the most basic terms possible and only came up with 174.
Many of those weren't successful sales, or (due to basic terms) not correct items.

 

That's going a bit far.
That's like saying you can buy a 2006 RP now for that money.
Unless silver prices go to the moon, you won't be buying these for 5% over melt.

 

Just this week I bought five 1986 Proof American Silver Eagles for $225. Pretty much all older commemorative and proof sets sell for less than issue price or sell for melt price. If it's sold as a collectible it will never be a collectible, with a mintage of 100k its not rare at all.

 

you left two zero's off, 500% over melt.

 

I'm not much of an ASE collector,and the price of ASE'S do go up & down , but the 2006 anniversary set has proven to be a very collectible set, and so has 2011 anniversary set.

 

You got a great deal that isn't typical. A quick internet search showed most asking over $400.

"2011 silver eagle set" brings up 350 with many being 5 sets- other search terms will yield different numbers of closed auctions. 33 of the first 100 did not sell - 10 K may be optimistic between 3 or 4 K maybe

 

I think everybody who is saying that these sets will go down the drain is angry because they couldn't get one.

 

That's absurd. I'm not sure if it's bat guano or horse guano but it's definitely ... guano! The 2006 3-pc sets, closest comparison, are wholesale Bid at $315, which is about 218% over melt ($99). Five years later might add. I've been collecting for 50 years and dealing for 20. How about you?
