They may suspend sales, but not stop them, as long as there's a profit to be made. At lower silver prices, after the "shock & awe" have subsided, sales will increase, possibly providing the same or higher total profits. It was 30 years ago, what’s that formula you learn in Econ 101 to set your price to maximize profit?

Yes, we will. And that's the problem with a government entity acting like a business with monopoly powers, creating "rarities" and charging what they like for them. Gone are the days of acquiring a potentially rare coin at near its cost to produce and reaping the benefits (profit) - the Mint now incorporates the rarity's value in the price, leaving the collector to pray the market value doesn’t decline. Yes, I'll admit, on rare occasions the MInt leaves some profit for us.

statequarterguy---- "Cat's out of the bag", don't you think? However you slice it, we still profit. Maybe not as much, but we do not lose, "we hope".

Well one redeeming thing is that the mint has the appearance of being anti-error. So this is the 'silver' lining...those are at face and a large part of the increased value in them is due to the mint being anal about not letting them into the wild.

I would tend to disagree with this. The UHR has made a lot of money for anyone who bought one from the Mint in 2009. In some cases that coin was a windfall. People have to learn to pick and choose their options if the intent is to profit off a coin from numismatic value. The mint also has some pretty good competition in this market. The Canadian, Perth, Royal, Chinese and Austrian mint all have products that competed directly against the Mint's products so they are not free to price their coins excessively high if they hope to make some money. If they run off their customers, Congress could shutdown their entire numismatic operation.

Point taken. I'm thinking about flying out to NY tonight.

I think the Mint is missing the boat. They should just make some rarities here and there, like the 1913 V Nickel, auction them off, and balance the US budget in no time.

Problem is, 5M for a coin brings the overall price down, then there are 6. More of them = lower price each. If the mint did something special to them or made 5 2011 V nickels then they would be just as rare. We are also almost 15 trillion dollars in debt, 5M is not going to make a dent

Yeah, just showing how bad it could get. They'd have to do it for a whole bunch of coins. Let's make 12 more 1804 Dollars, etc., etc......

I'm in for the maximum number (I believe it's 5) thru the Mint. That is, if I can act quick enough. I think they'll sell like hot cakes.

Yeah, somebody buy an extra one for me, I'll probably miss its release during school, it could very well sell out in an hour.

I would applaud the mint if they instituted a lottery sales approach for highly anticipated issues.

If you have a vacation day to burn, this may be good timing - but it could be too short of notice. Not sure if I'll go that route, but it's a possibility.

I'm thinkin' "sick day". I wouldn't even go the route of bargaining with the boss over a vacation/optional holiday.

Oh I will, I'm saving every penny for it! I don't think my parents would let me take all the savings I have (most are invested) to buy the other four I am allowed, even if it is a great investment, college is coming up in less than a year...
