Because I ran out of storage space, a couple of years ago, I sold most of my proof sets at a Whitman show. Some of them dating from the seventies. However, I kept maybe a dozen or so sets. I'll have to dig them out and see which ones I saved.

Silver Proof set sales as of 20 September, 2011...

2010 Silver Proof Set sales: 869 for a total of 573,269
2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 2,974 for a total of 458,286

The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set was 1995 (679,984). The average weekly sales figures needed by the end of the year (14 weeks left) to equal that mintage are...

2010 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 573,269) / 14 = 7,623
2011 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 458,286) / 14 = 15,836

I'm surprised anyone is still updating with the drop in silver recently. LOL, thanks for the update.

Sorry, I was out of town this week. Nice update! There was some pent up demand from the week before, but these numbers won't last. I just checked and silver closed for the week at $31/Oz...that's a 25% drop in just one (1) week!!

Anyone brave enough to see this as a buying opportunity is bottom feeding...they're not interested in paying top "US Mint" dollar for silver. That's what I love about these sets...if silver goes up, you get silver below melt, prices rise, and sales decline. If silver goes down, prices stay the same, and sales REALLY go down. The future numismatic price "should" more than make up for any drop in silver prices.

Is that a guarantee? ...nope.

However, history shows that times of economic upheaval are the conditions which produce key date coins. I've always said that silver is fairly priced at $18/Oz (imo). When prices stabilize at these lower prices, the Mint will lower their prices and sales will increase...but that likely won't happen before the end of 2011.

According to another thread in this forum, the CME changed margin requirements for gold (up by 21%), silver (up by 16%) and copper (up by 18%).

If memory serves, a few months ago they bumped the margin requirement for silver five times in about two weeks. If you think they will do it again, hold off buying. Otherwise, it is a buying opportunity.

Is the lower silver price increasing sales numbers? I got a set or two right before they suspended sales so I suppose they will go way down now!

I think if they lower the prices there will be a decent increase in sales.

I sent back some sets for replacement (scratched coins, etc.). I just received an email from the mint indicating that both the 2010 and 2011 sets are on back order.

Now to decide if I want to wait for the replacements to be sent, or try to cancel the replacement and then reorder - hopefully at a lower price - when (if?) they are available again.

Any updates? :D

They went back on sale... for the same price before they were pulled. I guess we won't be having dramatic swings in sales.

That's not the first time they've pulled them for repricing only to keep the price the same.

The drop in silver price can't be good for sales.

Oh well, I hope the 5oz ATBs do get repriced.

Why would they pull them for repricing then put them back at the same price when metals are still low?
Seems weird.

I just got three sets from the mint today (2- 2011, 1- 2010), these are my first proof set purchases ever. What type of quality is acceptable or reasonably expected? I can find flaws on all three sets. The 2010 has spots on the penny, what could be a scratch or hair on the nickel, and the middle quarter is upside down in the holder. The 2011's have what appears to be rim damage one one dime and penny, a blemish on the other dime. All are seen easily with the naked eye. With all three sets having issues is this normal or should I send them back and hope for better?

15. That quality is typical when ordering well past the release date. I have better luck when buying on the day they go on sale. You might get someone's return if you wait too long. If it bothers you send it back, but keep in mind you may either not get a replacement or get something worse. You decision may also depend on whether you purchased for your collection or for bullion. Agreed. For me it's bullion and when it's time to sale and collect profits, it won't matter to me. I don't even bother to look at them closely, whoever buys from me will be getting a non "cherry picked" set. Hopefully they become key dates so I can get rid of them quickly and move on to the next.

I had posted already a few posts up. Not expecting an upward swing on sales but we'll see when the dust settles.
