It seems that a lot of people in the bullion forum tend to be fairly provincial and stay with mostly U. S. products, but I was just curious if anyone was planning on purchasing any of these. They are being touted as the "coin of the year to own." The 1-ounce BU is selling for about $150.00 on ebay. The proofs are orbiting at around $500.00 for a 1-ounce. This is due to the limited mintage on these sizes. There are 2, 5, 10, kilo and 10-kilo sizes available selling at much closer to spot.

Anyway, it looks like a beautiful coin, the lunar series tends to maintain its premium and the dragon is the most popular "animal" of the series/Chinese calendar. I was just wondering if anyone else was interested in them also. Thanks.

Both the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint charge way too much for their coins. The price of $150 is nearly four times the price of an ounce of silver, whether the price is in US Dollars or Australian Dollars (currently trading at a premium). Beautiful coins? Yes. When I collected just base metal Australian proof sets and $10 silver state coins 30 years ago, they were way too expensive and I had to stop. Both of these Mints need to really bring their prices into some sort of reality, closer to market.

You could pick these up for around $50 apiece directly from the Perth Mint if they had them in stock. Yes the proof coins are about double that. These have sold out on APMEX, Gainesville Coins, and the mint itself so they are definitely selling like hotcakes. I am seeing them selling on ebay for even more, just because of the supply/demand dynamic. It's hard to believe a brand new coin that should be easily available is going for as much over spot as it is.

I really like the proof coin but there is such a premium on them that I'm not a buyer. The 3 coin gold proof set is just beautiful but the price for it is simply breathtaking.

You can blame me for the price
I was at the Perth Mint on the release date ,we had a 1 hour head start before the general public had access to the mint
It was a Silverstackers organised event
I sold the first 1 at the mint for $71AU to the person who runs the forum
When we got back to Melbourne ,I sold 3 for $100 each, the same night
A few days later I sold 10 for $1000

  7. I heard they are producing 300K of the one ounce silver bullion version...hardly a rarity. This seems like a lot of hype to me. If I can get one close to melt, then I am in. If not, I will pass. Plenty of other silver options out there. TC

I know what you all are saying. I'm just hoping this will be a replay of the 5-ounce ATBs and the prices will begin to fall after the initial hype has subsided. It would be nice if the regular Joe could afford to buy these. They look like beautiful coins.

They look ok. Wait and see if the prices come down.

  10. Does anyone know what this coin is? The design is much different such that the dragon is smaller that on the ones I have seen previously. Is this the bullion version or something else? Thanks, TC

The one you are showing TC is from the Royal Australian Mint. It weighs around 11 and 1/2 grams. The one that everyone wants is from the Perth Mint and is 1 oz. People working on the lunar collection will probably be more willing to pay the extra premium than someone looking at it strictly as a bullion purchase.

  12. Thanks for clearing that up. I almost pulled the trigger on this one thinking it was from the Perth Mint. TC

I see prices have dropped with the plunge in spot silver.

Yeah, you can now get them on Gainesville Coins for $100 instead of $120! I e-mailed the Perth Mint, and they stated all 300,000 have already been produced and sold. So good luck finding these for cheap. I will sadly have to steer clear of one of my favorite collections.

For those of you who don't mind giving the Perth Mint your identity, you can still buy 5 oz and 10 oz coins from perthmintbullion.com for under $50/oz. I was going to keep this to myself until I realized their registration process is somewhat invasive.

It's not only invasive it's ridiculous. To top it off we are not eligible to buy bullion direct fromt the Perth mint as of yet. They are working on it, but it is only available to Australia and a few other places right now.

You can buy from their regular website, but they get a nice premium on what they consider their numi products. The good news there is orders over $300 get free shipping, the bad news is the premium. They actually have 12 different colored dragons coming out, including the gold gilded version. Good luck in putting together a set of them, it'll set you back an arm, leg, few kids and 2nd mortgage.

I was all ready to go ahead with this until I got to the drycleaning part. Those demands I will not meet!
