First Spouse gold...Are they Bullion or Collectibles??

I would think that the First Spouse gold coins are collectibles but some might be selling at just slightly above melt instead of at the huge premium that it used to sell at when the first ones came out. This is just a guess on my part.

those first ones carry no premium the 2008 on ones do.

the way I see it, I paid under $450 for each of my Jefferson's Liberty coins, so there IS a premium on the bullion, if not the coin.

I have Sarah Polk, Julia Tyler and Martha Washington first spouse gold coins. A friend told me they are valuable and I am thinking of adding them to my collections. I have gold coins that are ready to be on sale in case I will be needing money but these first spouse gold coins will never be on the list of sales :))

That's one that escaped my mind. But I think you're right - if the series lasts till then I think her coin would be popular. Has she ever been on a coin before?

Should that happen you would think it would be a media event - which would boost sales.

I was procastinating on the Julia Grant. But I finally bought it just before the last big increase, so the premium I paid was minimized a good bit.

I took the advice of an article I read the other day and bought two of the $5 MOH coins. The premium was ridiculously low. I don't know what it is now.

On the MOH it's getting repriced. You'll be very happy with what you paid for yours.

Anyone buy any Lucy Hayes before they were suspended?

I didn't buy a Lucy Hayes, but I did by a Medal of Honor gold coin for $444.95. I think the gold content is now higher than the issue price. I bought it because I liked the side with the cannons and Miss Liberty holding the shield and flag.

I wonder if Gold goes over $2000 ... then over $3000 ... how low will the First Spouse Mintages go? Could we see a F.S. mintage in the hundreds before it's all said and done?

If gold goes that high I, like you, would think many more people would be priced out of the spouse collection.
I have to guess many already have abandoned the attempt of assembling the full set because of the price of gold.
Hard to say how many would be buying these in that environment.

I've been a bit cash-strapped lately...I still need the Johnson and Grant, also. They suspended all the First Spouse coin sales.

A while back, I recall reading a US Mint policy that states (and I'm paraphrasing from memory) any changes in the London AM Fix above a certain percentage in a week automatically triggers a suspension of sales. I'll try to find the exact wording. It has to do with the likelihood a product could move above its price band before the week is out...prompting a "run on the market"...something like that. :grandpa:

I wonder if gold shot up high enough, if the Mint might start to alloy the gold with silver or copper? And issue these as 40% gold coins? Like they did with the 1965-1970 Kennedy Half Dollars?

Where can I get my hands on a 40% gold Kennedy Half?

It will be tough to find a problem free one- on the spouses that I did not purchase on the day of issue I had to do 2 or 3 returns (which is costly and a huge hassle)

There are (normally) nine (9) London Fix prices (AM and PM) that are averaged from Thursday AM Fix through the following Wednesday AM Fix (the Wednesday PM Fix isn't used). There's a chart at the top for the Price Guide that outlines the Mint's decision making process on whether or not to raise or lower prices sooner. I believe Criteria #7 occurred and, being a Friday, probably thought a sales suspension was in order until they could sort everything out on Monday.

Note: Monday was the "Summer Bank Holiday" in England

Gold had already gone up to the next tier on Thursday, 01Sep and by Friday the average was getting close to breaking a second tier (the PM price already had). The Mint suspended sales under these conditions once before and that's when they began posting their decision making process. That's my understanding, anyway.

I am pretty sure this would take an act of congress. Since these coins are not used as currency I don't see where they would have a need to do it anyway.

Since this is about First Spouse pricing, I'll post the updated chart over here, also.

Got my Lucy in time!

I think that for the series to truly be "bullion," they would be available through the Mint's AP for bullion program like the Eagles, Buffs and ATB pucks. If these are considered bullion, wouldn't this be only time that bullion is sold exclusively as numismatic versions of a bullion that is not available as such?
