first spouse gold coins might take off and even up very high if the government stop issuing them.

Thank you guys for keeping this thread going. I've recently read most of it and it's rekindled my interest in these coins, as has the release of the Julia Grant coins.

I see these Julia Grant coins as some of the most attractive in the entire series so far. The artwork is fantastic and the reverse is pretty decent compared to many others in the series.
    Anyone else agree?

Granted she's no Sarah Polk or Louisa Adams ... but as a coin design, it's well done. No?

The Julia Grant is terrific! She looks like Queen Victoria. Each design is unique and special...there hasn't been a design I haven't liked. As long as they are an accurate representation of each First Spouse, how can they be anything else but terrific?

The Mary Lincoln was a bit of a stretch, though. I don't know how much visiting she did with the troops. I guess that's the only one I have some qualms about.

Since I only got the non spouse Liberties I for one consider them collectables. But it is nice to see the base metal in them gain some value as the dollars I have seem to be evaporating.

I'm feeling the pinch "Big Time", but since I knew (thought, anyway) that this would be a great series and PMs were on their way up, I bought two of everything as insurance against rising prices.

I'm keeping the PR/MS-70s and selling the rest (for a tidy profit)...and rolling those proceeds into the newer issues. That will get me into the 20th century when rising interest rates "should" bring PMs back to earth. If that doesn't happen, I'll have to get a second job just to support my First Spouse "habit".

When the dust settles, I wonder how many complete PR/MS-70 sets will exists...I'm guessing < 100. I hope to have one of them.

I think everyone is feeling the pinch

Good call on your part yakpoo.
I think you are right that so few will have PR/MS 70 full sets.

I also think the number of folks who will have full sets regardless of grade will be VERY low.
Which leads me to doubt that the low mintage spouses will ever garner a significant premium.
Who is going to buy them?
Who will want a Letitia Tyler UNC and pay dearly for it if they haven't got the full set to complete it with? I think after the program, the vast majority will simply be priced as bullion.

the spouse coins will be much cheaper when gold goes back down. no need to panic, they will be for sale.

some of those dates have very low mintages and all of them are held by collectors with tight fists. There will be none to be had (dealers only bought the first year issues).

I'm not that worried about it one way or the other. some of those coins are ugly.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. First Spouse coins will probably be like Carson City dollars; you can't collect them all, but it's nice to have at least one.

I have gone back and forth on the First Spouse series and I actually own a fair number, almost all in the Liberty subset (2 Jefferson's, 2 Jackson's, 11 Van Buren's, 1 Buchannen); however I generally think of these as bullion coins with a slight chance there could be a rarity premium many years from now (however I am not convinced of that).

    A few general thoughts:

    1. I think the concept is pretty awful, nobody cares about the wives of presidents, I know I don't (Sarah Polk? Are you kidding me?)

    2. I like the Liberty subset because it uses old U.S. coin designs, which i think could help (at least a little bit) with collector demand

    3. If gold continues to rise, it will greatly reduce the number of people that will try to collect the whole set (as it's just too expensive for most). I think there are (already) very FEW F.S. set collectors.

    4. Some of the low mintage coins could get a premium in the future. Just look at the Jackie Robinson $5 Gold coin in UNC condition. So it's certainly in the realm of possibility, however I am not holding my breath!

So bottom line for me is I think of my first spouse coins as just bullion with a potential kicker down the road. I paid between $660 and $700 for most of mine, so I already have a profit, since just the gold content is worth over $800 with current gold prices. Will these ever get a huge premium (2x, 3x, etc) attached? I sort of doubt it, but who knows, stranger things have happened. I think one of the most limiting factors will be collector demand as most people just don't care about this series and even fewer can afford it (at least that is my impression).

I think low mintage means a lot. Take a look at the 2009 prices of the modern gold $5 lower mintage coins Jackie Robinson... pre 2009 FS low mintages they have taken about a 30% haircut. while the 2007 FS went up about 50% due to increase in gold prices.

    My 2 cents

1st Spouse Gold that were minted in 2007-W & 2008-W.
A lot were melted as gold jumped so the mintage # could be a lot lower the what is noted.
:devil:I was able to pickup a few till "Ca$h in to Gold" made me leave the hotel lobby for buying coins.
