The Mint resumed sales of the 2011 & 2010 silver proof sets a few days ago after the price of silver was sundered.

The mint now has a 'wait list' notice up. POS keeps falling. I'm gona keep this one with the line. It will look great alongside my MS68DMPL Hot Springs I got from Jack Hunt! Bring on the Yellowstone puck! My luck has to change!

I was wondering what that was! Thanks.

Got mine yesterday. No lines, some black fluff (part of the packaging?) arond the edges, but can't tell if it is on the coin or not. Also the letter "N" in the word "Springs" lloks like it could have used a drop more silver under 20x magnification (There is a slighty "weak" strike where the diagonal meets the second leg. I wanted to post pic's, but forgot last night, perhaps tomorrow (and it will be hard with my camera to get a good picture anyway).

I love the way your bottom picture turned out with the lighting!
I wish they actually looked like that!

I know I'm new here. I've been watching for a while and thought this an appropriate topic to wade in on for my first real post.
That said, I recieved mine yesterday and it has the 'line' through the SPRINGS. On the reverse the letters fade out towards the bottom. That is, where it says quarter dollar on the bottom, the bottom 1/3rd of the letters TER DOL are not as prominent. The arrowhead on mine has some detail but not alot.
This is my first 5 oz coin too.

My coin came in on Tuesday. It looks pefect except it seems to have a slight thinning above the O and F in OF. Then, I looked at it with a magnifier and it looks normal. It must be the lighting. With the shield, I see the mountain and the tree and a speck at the bottom (the Bison?) but it doesn't look as good as is shown by jon h. The designer initials are complete. I am thoroughly pleased with this coin and I believe it would grade very high. :thumb:

Hmm, I wonder if there's any relation between the "strong" detail on the shield and the "lines/rippling" through Springs. Mine has the rippling and as strong a detail on the shield as any shown on this thread. What combination do you all have?

  10. I have absolutely no line/rippling. In fact, the coin is well-struck all around (except for the emblem). TC

Mine has no ripples and a stronger shield than the one posted above I believe . I'll try to get a pic. Also Ive noticed that around the edge there are 3 evenly spaced lines about 120 degrees apart that appear to be silver flow from the collar. Has anyone else noticed this?

This just appears to be normal die wear to me... I'd not be betting on the farm that these are going to be worth anything .

Pics of shield. The white circles are glare from LED's.

Just got mine. Yup, the dreaded crease. It also rattles around badly in the capsule. I think the capsule isn't closed all the way, but I haven't been able to mash the lid down any tighter. There is a lot of crud stuck between the coin and capsule. It was fun to be part of thebuying frenzy for the next 'hot item', but I doubt i'll buy any more. Still waiting on my apmex set.

I count 97 current eBay listings for the "2010 P Hot Springs 5oz" coin. Lowest buy-it-now price is $399 and the highest is $999. Looks like they are selling in the range of $365 to $380 with shipping.

I concur. Just look at the results of the poll. These seem to be relatively common and exist on 50% of the mintage. Not much of a rarity or unique strike at all.

MCM had some graded NGC SP70 slabbed versions of these coins yesterday for $649. SP69 for $349. Today they are gone.

Well it is a shame my vote dosen't count 4 times as all of the coins I have seen all have the wierd indentation through the word "springs". LAME~ Can anyone verify if the coins with the lines are being punished for it by the grading companies? Otherwise the coins I have seen look really good.

It seems the Big-2 grading companies may be relaxing their criteria, at least in terms of the 5-ounce pucks. My impression has always been the average person should not be able to tell the difference between a 69 and a 70-grade without some magnification. If any of the Hot Springs coins ever receive a 70, it will be interesting to see if it has the line or not. I have 2 69-graded ATB bullion pucks by PCGS that are definitely not up to the standard of all of my other 69-graded coins. If they are lowering their criteria in general, or even just in terms of this particular issue, it is disappointing to those of us who are more interested in the quality of the coin than the number grade assigned to it. Last year, I purchased a 2010 ASE proof online. It was graded 69 by NGC. When I received it, it had milk spots on it, which I absolutely despise. Needless to say, I returned the coin. Maybe coin grading is not the panacea many seem to think it is. I think if you are a collector who is truly interested in the coin and its quality, the grade is not as important. I received a Hot Spring collector's coin from the Mint and it had the line on it. I have already sold it, as that line was a "deal breaker" for me. It could have graded a 70 and I still would not have wanted it, regardless of what it was worth, because, to me, it was just another reminder of the Mint's poor quality control. I am in no way a coin grader, but my feeling is there is no way a coin with that line in it should be a 69-grade. To me, regardless of whether the line affects the grading or not, it is, in reality, still a substandard coin production. In terms of visual beauty, I'll take a 5-ounce Libertad over 1 of these pucks anyday.
