Hello guys! My dad and I used to do quite a good amount of roll searching back when I was around 11 years old. This is where I got most of my silver today, and for well below spot! :smile We used to dig through a lot of quarter rolls and occasionally some half dollar and dollar rolls. Recently, I got about $80 in quarters and all the half dollars they had at the bank (weird, they only had $13 and they were loose). I found no silver. I used to find silver quarters everywhere. My father still roll searches, and after hundreds of dollars in quarters, only found 2 silvers. I want some of your opinions. Is roll searching worth the work anymore? To me, I no longer find it worth driving to the bank for.
No, I just look through everyone else's coin jars now just for the fun of it and if they have anything I educate them on their silver, but even then I hardly ever find any. I always check change handed to me but other than those few times I do not go to the bank and roll search.
You can find things other than silver while roll searching. There are key/semi key dates, errors, toning, or just something that looks interesting! I wouldn't recommend searching for only silver unless you have a lot of time and patience on your hands. I still enjoy getting boxes from the bank for the other reasons stated above.
I don't roll search by buying boxes anymore. I will only buy customer wrapped rolls. I have not found any silver halves in about a month. I got a roll of silver half proofs that someone had turned in but that is it.
