I have recently roll searched through some halves, and I managed to pull 4 90% Halves and 29 40% Halves. Now I began collecting bullion only. What I'm looking for is, should I trade the silver coins I have in for pure silver weight, or keep some of both? Any input is greatly appreciated.
I like coins better, they can be found in circulation, and if the bottom falls out on silver, they will have collector value and face value. ASE's and other bullion coins usually have more of a premium on them.
I have a pretty diverse mix of different sized bars, 1 oz rounds, and junk silver (mostly dimes). If I ever need to barter with somebody I'd prefer not to have to overpay because I don't have exact change. Even at $40 a 1 oz round is a bit high on the denomination scale. So I would say keep both.
I like to hold half my stack in 1 oz .999 rounds or coins, and the other half in junk silver (dimes, quarters, and mostly halfs)
get both coins and bullion. - if the US dollar crashes, you will need to barter. you dont want to spend 1 ounce of silver just for 1 egg right? - if the US dollar doesn't crash, you would have at least a nice silver coin collection that you can relish and remind you of the colorful history of America. at the same time, you have the bullions as a parallel investment besides from paper products
What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to protect yourself as a gloom and doomer? Do you want to make some cash because you see an opportunity? Do you like coins and think you'd like to collect? Are you dabbling and not sure which direction to take? A buddy told you it was cool and you think you'd like to be cool too? (ok, this is sarcasm)
I've had both ASE's and Maple Leafs and pre 65' 90% silver and had a big problem when I recently had to cash in some silver for some emergency cash. I called at lest 20 dealers-pawn shops and refiners in central NC and the price I was offered for the 90% was a joke the best was $5 below spot compared to $1 over spot for either the ASE's or Maple Leafs. So unless you have time to deal with either a large dealer like Apmex who will buy ASE's for $1.80 over spot for sales less than $10,000 or $2.00 over spot for sales over $10,000 not bad. Provident and Gainesvilles offers $1.00 over spot for ASE's and $1.20 for Maple Leafs..Selling on Ebay is OK but you wind up paying about a 12% fee when all is done so selling your ASE's for $50 gets you $45 so most of the time you wind up getting less than spot for your ASE's and Maple Leafs
