A nice place to start might be the fractional gold eagles. Make sure it is graded by a reputable grader (PCGS, NGC, ANACS).

Are you saying you wouldn't be the 5 dollar gold eagle unless it was graded.

just the opposite actually. If you are looking to invest in gold or silver, you DON'T want to pay extra for a graded coin. I'm sure many will agree. Graded coins have there place, but if your looking to invest in gold, you really don't want to pay extra for the same amount of gold. Graded bullion is an interesting topic, but most will say it is not worth it. Read up on this forum and you will see what i mean.

Also, try to save up and buy higher fractional gold pieces, as 1/10 eagles carry a very high premium, If you can save up and buy a 1/4 1/2 or whole ounce, you will be better with that latter. But if you can only afford 1/10 right now, I wouldn't let that stop you, as I believe the premium will be passed shortly by golds rising value. If you can afford to buy a 1/10 oz eagle every month, I see nothing wrong with that.... But

Also consider buying foreign gold such as British Sovereigns, French 20 Francs, Krugerrands, Austrian 100 Coronaes or Mexican 50 Pesos. You will pay much less premium than with American eagles (especially fractional eagles like the 1/10oz eagle). I actually recently made a post on this forum asking if I should sell one of my 1/10oz eagles for the sole purpose of selling for the premium to reinvest in a lower premium gold piece!

I just picked up a British Sovereign for 3% over spot at my local dealer. They are extremely well known (The military actually gives these in emergency kits to our troops). They are 22K and contain 0.2354 oz. (just under a 1/4 ounce) of gold.

    good luck!
