yeah I don't plan on selling any of my coins unless i'm starving to death
and for the record i really like collecting maples, kooks, libertads, ASE and a lot of silver bullion coins, alongside bullion.
the bars and junk silver won't have much sentimental attachment, they're just silver.

Well to reply to ratio411 the mint stuff was mostly going to be a purchase in something cool for my kids to look at and have some 90% silver in the house. I had originally decided on the bullion bars. But with the news yesterday of Utah possibly passing the law to accept silver and gold coins as currency has got me thinking I might be wise to buy the ASE coins with a few bars here and there for a mixture.

that's what i do too. I like getting bars, and various silver ounce coins along with commemoratives and other coins I just happen to think are cool

90% coins cost the refiner more to melt, so they are worth less than .999 coins/bars/rounds after you adjust for silver content. A reliable Local Coin Shop (LCS) will have a smaller premium on junk 90% silver than on .999. The ones charging the same are taking advantage of you IMHO. They will not pay the same for them when the buy for example. My LCS calculates their junk 90% prices based on the coins silver content, plus a small premium. For example, when I paid $30 for a 1 oz bar I could buy 2 halves for $22.30.

The advantage of ASE's is you are paying a small premium to protect your investment, a form of insurance. ASE's are Legal Tender. Shops pay more for them, the extra premium is covered when you sell. It is the same when you see people paying more for Englehard or J&M bars/rounds than for generics.

I'm with you. I have lots of junk silver that I'm going to sell. I'll probably flip that money directly into silver commemoratives. That way I keep some silver in the house but its in something that I find interesting and will probably never sell. I know I'll pay higher than "spot" but if silver goes up than I'm covered. If it doesn't I'm still covered because I enjoy the collection.

I've gotten some real deals lately at antique shops. Buying halves, morgans, and peace dollars for under spot. They don't seem to update their price. While i like Apmex you sure pay a premium, and then $40 + for shipping and if you use a credit card they stick you even worse.

I like junk silver if I can get it under spot and I'm always willing to pay a premium for ASE or maples.

Little of all seems to be the path I took
Silver Proof sets old and new , Silver bars & bullion even a few commemoration coins some old 90% as well
I figure that way at least one must be a good idea and there all cool in there own way

I wouldn't go for bars, unless you're investing all the way. My (bad) scale of investing in silver............

Lowest price, underrated: Silver Bars/Rounds (quite ugly though, rounds have better design at least)
    Junk Silver
    Silver Eagles, Pandas, Maple Leafs
Highest price, overrated: Silver Proof Sets
