Just for the sake of playing devil's advocate, what if the dollar crashed, and PM's were the new currency? What if the USD is fine, but nobody can buy or sell without a microchip implant, and people began using PM's for illegal commerce off the grid? RFID tracking is blowing up right now. I know these things set off the crazy alarms, but they are within the realm of possibility. I for one don't plan on being caught off guard.
Before this question can be answered, you have to explain exactly what "dollar crashed" means. It sounds dramatic, but without covering the details, then it's an unanswerable question.
One possibility is hyperinflation which would destabilize the price of everything make commerce with the dollar nearly impossible. Another possibility would be that the dollar index just hits the floor after a dead cat bounce, destroying its purchasing power. It was more of a rhetorical question. Just trying to examine all angles since this thread seemed pretty one sided. Personally, I don't think we will see either of those things unless we are the only country pumping out new money, but just because it's unlikely doesn't mean it can't happen and we shouldn't be prepared.
Since the topic is about the gubment taking people's silver, you would also have to explain how silver would solve the issues you mention. I still contend that such a thing would bring no benefit to the current government as gold did in the 1930s. In the 1930s people still regarded currency in the amount of gold or silver it represented. It limited what government could do and is the primary reason they didn't remove silver at that time as well. These days, generations later, this is a foreign concept to most as the people are generally happy with fiat money because they simply don't know the history. I would contend the government has plenty of other tools that it can use. Things such as reissuing the currency and putting a $ limit on the amount that can be converted is one method. Another is to default on the debt. The decision depends upon who is chosen to be the winners and losers by the political establishment. (scary thought isn't it) However I would say that confiscation of PMs won't be part of the solution. It's too difficult, the results are unknowns, and I don't see what it would bring to the federal government. However this doesn't mean that people shouldn't hold PMs as a method of preserving wealth. Don't confuse the two issues.
Fatima, your posts have been spot on. The reason for and mechanics of the gold confiscation in the 30s and the potential for a silver confiscation today are widely misunderstood. And the misunderstanding is perpetuated by articles written by people with no qualifications.
Can I just step in here for a minute to address the "implant" shibboleth? Why on Earth would a government take this approach, when they can instead simply outlaw cash entirely? We're already well on our way down that road. They wouldn't even have to outlaw it -- just disincentivize it. Until I took up change-searching again, I did almost nothing with cash, using a rewards credit card instead. If you don't carry a balance, all the overhead is borne by the merchant, and you get a nice little bonus at the end of the year. And it's so much easier and safer than carrying cash -- I've got thousands in my pocket, none of which is at risk of someone grabs my wallet, and checking out with a credit card is actually faster than counting out cash and change. Suppose there is some Vast One World Government Conspiracy to turn us all into tracked and controlled cattle. Why on Earth would They rely on clunky, obvious, invasive, removable-and-transferrable, late-20th-century technology like implants? They can already pick up our fingerprints, our faces, our eyes, the way we walk, and the path we've followed past Their omnipresent surveillance cameras. Soon, They'll be able to smell our body chemistry, if not our DNA, whenever we walk by. Why would They need implants?
It wouldn't be cost effective. Even if they managed to secure 10 million ounces of silver, thats only $350 Million. Thats not enough to fund the war in Iraq & Afghanistan for a day. Besides the federal reserve can print that money with just a few mouse clicks.
People don't need money to engage in trade. In fact, money is a relatively late invention, first appearing in the form of coins about 600 BC. The Egyptians built the Pyramids without it. Money simplifies trade. Without it, I might desire Item X, but not have Item Y that my potential trading partner desires. That means I might have to trade Item Z to somebody who has Item A in order to get Item B that another person will trade me for Item Y. If "the market" perceives all those items as being worth C dollars each, I can just sell my Item Z, buy Item X and let all those other people do their own shopping. But if there's no such thing as money, and I really want Item X, I'll do all that hoop-jumping. Money makes the trade easier, is all.
Electronic cash is great, use it all the time, but always have quick access to about a thousand in cash. Never know when the lights might go out. Oh and not sure why someone would rant about microchips. When you go to the store is it really better to have the clerk ask to scan "the way you walk" to pay for your stuff? C'mon!
You can disguise them as colanders and that way when visitors come over, they just think you like to cook.
I agree. Why, some of these posts are right up there with the outrageous beliefs of a few quacks that some states might completely outlaw collective bargaining by some groups for their benefits. Oh. Wait. That just happened. Never mind.
I have never underestimated the ability of people, especially elected and those of self importance, to feel that only they know the "TRUTH". Think what would be the "TRUTH" if this was December, 2012. So easy to just go back to bed in the morning, but I try to pick out the better ones with the cash I raised selling commodities last month. More and more I am feeling that the nuclear problem in Japan will turn out to be caused by greed and lack of conscience in the operating company. IMO Jim
Uh-oh!! Now you've done it!! I had a casual conversation with a relative lately about that...yikes!!! Nearly got taken off at the ankles, just for the mere mention!! That would be a teacher... Lucy
I would agree with you other than that RFID chips were the size of a grain of pepper years ago, not exactly clunky, but they do migrate and are not practical for that purpose. I think regardless of the methodology employed it's the same scenario of PM's being needed in a cashless society, for those who want to maintain their liberty.
First off, This entire thread is offensive. It might be benificial if a GM locks this entire thread because it is going into a debate issue that is not related to coins, cointalk or any other legitimit purpose of cointalk.com While I do pay attention to the "Crack Pot conspiracy theories" with the way the world is Turing out I would not be surprised if some of them become a reality. Does this then make me a nut-job? Or far worse that dreaded word "Terrorist!" No These do however reflect the way I think, I fear there may be more to what's going on the what the media proposes and that maybe every choice made by the governments of the world are for profit. More so, control of the "sheep" is just so that way they can keep their profit going and no one will ever say a thing. I am not scared the boogy man is going to come in and kill me and my family HOWEVER, just as with the issue of god, I would rather listen to both sides of the argument, in detail and then make a logical choice in what to believe, rather than listening to everything FOX news tells you or better yet CNN. Please note that Fox is nothing but for the republicans benefit and CNN is for the betterment of Democrats. I thought the media was not to be biased but I guess that's impossible. Everyone had an agenda, tell me what you would do if you had all that power.
