The Jane Pierce Proof First Spouse coin has SOLD OUT!

    The current sales figures are...

    Proof: 4,828
    Unc: 3,238

    Total: 8,066

The Jane Pierce coins were scheduled to remain on sale until the beginning of June. Apparently, the Mint can't make any new coins after Dec 31st. They estimate how many they will sell and, if the estimate is off, we get an early sellout!

The Buchanan Proofs sold out a few weeks ago. In the case of the Buchanan proof, the Mint announced it had only minted a total of 13,000 Buchanan coins even though the maximum allowable mintage was set at 15,000.

The current Buchanan sales figures are...

    Proof: 7313
    Unc: 4803

    Total: 12,116

If the Mint is to be believed, that would leave approximately 884 Buchanan Uncs remaining. There may even be a few less due to damaged/destroyed coins.

Assuming the Jane Pierce coins were minted with the same Proof:Unc ratio as the Buchanan coins, there may have been as few as 8,600 total Jane Pierce coins struck...leaving a mere 534 Unc coins left.

This is all conjecture, of course...but you wouldn't expect the Mint to strike more Uncs than Proofs, would you? That would have to be the case if the Mint struck a total of 10,000 Jane Pierce coins. I think the total has to be less than 10,000!

    This is HUGE! :hail:

I had thought the Mint could produce FS coins throughout the year they were on sale. Apparently that's not the case; they can only produce them during the year inscribed on the coin.

The Mint estimates how many coins they think will sell and only make that number. The Mint reports only making 13,000 of the Buchanans...don't know about the Pierce coins, yet. Apparently, the Mint doesn't like minting coins and destroying them when they don't sell.

What I find interesting is how they estimate the number of coins to produce for an issue such as the Margaret Taylor or the Mary Lincoln...which are initially released in the beginning of December. I'm sure they made plenty of the Lincolns, though.

Another interesting point is that the Abigail Fillmore is still on sale...and has sales far in excess of the Jane Pierce. The Mint must have begun minting "less than the Max" fairly recently. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I'm not sure "reneged" is the right word; I would say that if they produced more than the Max Mintage...

    PS:
way back when I guessed that Jane would be the lowest but I had no idea that this would be why she was so close!

Yes, I read this today also. I thought I would have time to buy them before the price went up and guessed wrong. So, then I thought I could wait to buy them since the price already went up. Then I read this. So, I went online and bought the last two I needed, Pierce and Fillmore. And the article is right the UNC Fillmore is on backorder.

When the Buchanan proof sold out, I figured it was because of the extra demand for the liberty head. But the Pierce proof sellout seems to shoot a hole into that theory as well.

(well, the buchie proof did have more of a mintage though)

Since the Abigail Fillmore has higher sales than the Pierce or Buchanan and it's not sold out, yet...I'm thinking that the Mint may have begun a new FS sales strategy.

It could be that they're tired of minting FS coins only to melt them down again when they don't sell. They might be reducing the number of coins they mint in order to ensure sell outs prior to the end date. If they're going to do that, we may have some great rarities coming up in the next few years.

The Eliza Johnson "TBD" status is interesting, too...since they were originally set to go on sale this past Friday. I heard the EJ design approval may have been delayed, but maybe they're just trying to give the Abigail Fillmores a little more time to sell.

I'm willing to believe design issues were the reason for the Eliza stall.

But, one question that nags at me is the Fillmore backorder. How could something be back ordered unless their inventory is depleted and they have to mint more of them? And since the Fillmore is a 2010 coin, how can they decide to mint more?

I see that the Uncs are backordered...

Product will be available for shipping 03/21/2011

...but not the Proofs; they look like they're available now. Some folks say that the Mint may be waiting for packaging or COAs, but that's just speculation.

On 03Feb2011, the Mint posted the final 2011 First Spouse designs...

The 2010 First Spouse final design announcement was made on 21Dec2009...a month and a half earlier. The delay this year may have been due to the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP)...which may explain the Eliza Johnson "TBD" status.

Ahhh... didn't think about accessories. That could very well explain it.

Of course, you have to wonder why they would have that problem with the Fillmore but not the Lincoln or Buchanan which came after it.

    But, who knows?

Maybe Mary and Buc are already boxed...

I don't know how the Mint does it's business; if it has its own printing shop or contracts that out. It could be that they order COAs in 5,000 card lots (or something like that) and someone forgot to order more "Fillmore Uncs"...just a guess.

I call in sick on FS sales days... this sure is making it hard to plan my absence! I let the Payroll Sec know that my March 3rd illness has been postponed but that my condition should flare up soon!

LMAO! ...I think have the same ailment. :D Thank goodness for Universal Health Care! I think that's what's known as a "pre-existing condition".

Yes! It can actually be traced to a 2006 press release, although it wasn't severe enough to miss work until 6/19/07. Thank God I've had the same coverage since '01 so it's not an issue...for me at least.

I don't think the mint does order fulfillment from the actual West Point mint. Maybe the coins are still in transit from production to the place where they are shipped from.

Yeah...that makes perfect sense (don't know why I didn't think of it). The coins are probably stored at the Mint and shipped to the Fullfillment center as ordered...duh!
