Hey guys/gals, I mostly hold 90% silver and .999 silver. I also have a $10 face roll of almost uncirculated 1969-D 40% Halfs. Besides taking up double the space of 90%, are there other down sides to holding 40% silver? Is it harder to get rid of? Do many of you hold 40% silver in your portfolio? Also, I was having trouble finding how much silver is in these 40% halfs. I know there are 715 ounces in $1000 face of 90%. I'm pretty sure there is about 300 ounces in a bag of 40% halfs. Is this true? Thanks. edit: I would be selling the 40% to buy 90%.
Hi, Try coininfo.com This site gives the silver content of you coins plus much more. Try the site and I am sure you will like it.
I just sold almost all of my 40% Kennedy's around a week or two ago on ebay when silver was strong at $30. I don't regret it yet but you never know. I'd say, wait and weigh the answers you get.
It takes a lot of coins to have some silver. If you can store them good if storage is tight sell and buy 90%.
I have some 40% silver I'm holding. If I chose to get rid of it, that's easy. Your $10.00 face roll is worth $82.85 this moment. It contains 2.9579 ozs. of silver. Each coin is worth $4.14. Each coin contains .1479 oz. silver. I would keep them. Up to you though. Hope this helps.
Roughly 295 ounces of silver in a bag of 40% halves. (Rounded down for wear) I'd convert them to 90%. http://www.apmex.com/Category/243/40_Silver_Coins_Rolls__Bags.aspx
What is a fair price per ounce when bringing your silver coins to a dealer or jeweler? For instance if silver is at $28/oz: A 90% half = $10.13 x .85 = $8.61 A 40% half = $4.14 x 85% = $3.52 Would 85% be good?
A dollar under melt value for 40% halves. They cost more to refine, so expect less of a percentage of melt than you'd get for 90%.
The selling point about 40% silver Kennedys is that they are of a known weight and fineness that nearly all US dealers know. I have a roll of those things, but I don't know if I would sell them because I have fond memories of them from my earliest days as a collector.
I'm keeping mine. I have $940 face. I might sell at some point and switch into platinum or palladium.
