is that a good deal for junk pre1964 silver? I had a local dealer offer to buy from me at that price.
I'm not sure what silver's at now but when it was a little under $27 I sold a bunch for 18.125 times face. I know silver has been higher since then.
call around the best advice I have, also if you have a favorite dealer you may decide to sell to him/her even if it is a little less just to help them out.
were you selling as a dealer to a customer? this dealer is pretty close (no postage and no ebay fees)
With silver trading $29.33 a bag has a melt of 20.97x face. Tulving makes a market in bags, paying -.80 and selling at -.10. Therefore he is selling 20.9x and paying 20.4x. If you are selling 18x you are taking a 12% haircut for selling small quantities. Your discount to melt is almost 14%.
I guess I'm spoiled. My local dealer is paying the best i have seen anywhere. When silver was at $29.55 I sold a bunch and got $20.25 per dollar. They handle HUGE volume. All the dealers/jewelers in the region that don't do enough volume to get top dollar from the refineries go through him
This is why I like ASEs. The dealers near me have never paid less than spot for them in my memory, and often pay more. Junk silver is more of a crapshoot when you go to resell.
But you also always pay a couple dollars more than spot for them so it works out the same in the end.
Recently here in Oregon, I have seen it selling for 21-22 times face. The way I calculate the true value is to take 1 dollar of coins. 10 dimes, 4 quarters or 2 halves. Use the number .72 and multiply it by the current spot price for silver. Example for 2 1964 Kennedy halves at Fridays closing silver price 12-24-2010. .72 X 29.28= $21.08 For Morgan dollars and Peace dollars each, use the number .77 Remember, it must be $1 worth of coins. With the dimes, quarters and halves the .72 remains constant and does not change. Only the spot price number changes from day to day. Same for Morgans and Peace dollars, the .77 remains constant and does not change. The .72 represents 72% of an ounce of silver. The .77 is 77% of an ounce of silver.
No. Bad deal. I checked a day or two ago, both bid and ask were 20-something x face. IIRC it was 21x bid, and 22x ask.
