I'm helping an older relative convert his gold coins into cash and find he has the following commemorative gold coins/metals: John F. Kennedy which appears to be 30 gm of gold with the certifcate printed in German. origin name seems to be Sirom K.G. Milano 1984 Helen Hayes in an Accugrade slab (yes, I've read the thread on Accugrade) Humberto II Italia Rex (1/2 oz) Pope John XXIII Vatican II commemorative (1 oz) Is there somewhere on the net I can research commemoratives? These seem to be only lightly traded if at all. I usually only buy Krugarands, Eagles or Maples so I'm pretty ignorant regarding any premium this type of gold may have. BW
Don't expect much of a premium, as those are probably medals, not coins. They may very well be gold pieces, of course, but a medal can basically be made and "issued" by anybody. Coins are issued by (or at least in the name of) a country/government, and pretty much every modern coin indicates its face value. For example, no German speaking country has issued a JFK coin ... Christian
Thanks Christian. That was my impression. One is a Helen Hayes commemorative and the gold content is part of the relief on the metal, 1 oz. The JFK medal has a certificate with the gold content, but the other two Pope John 23 and Umberto II have no indications. Is there a catalogue anywhere I could look for these? I weighed them to a 0.1 gm and measured them to calculate density. Them sure seem to to be gold. Bob
OK I've attached some pictures although quality isn't great. I can try to improve them if they're too poor. This is the JFK medal, I'll do the Pope John 23 and Umberto separately. Bob
As with everything, Ebay is a good place to see what they are actually selling for. You must look at "sold" items, or watch the auctions. Some people list this stuff for crazy prices (myself included occasionally). If they are solid gold, you will always get the melt value of the metal, but gold is down this month - around $1170-$1180 per troy ounce. Good luck!
Gold down about $200 since this thread started...hopefully the OP sold in 2010 (or better yet in 2011)...
