I have read in a few places that the 'uncirculated' bullion version of the Silver eagle was produced in San Francisco and also at Phildelphia and West Point. It has been posted on Wikipedia that way and I just watched a video where the guy says that it was minted in SF from 1986 to 92 and in Philadelphia and West Point from 1993 to 2000, and since 2000 exclusively at West Point. I know that all three mints at some point produced the 'proof versions' and the 'burnished' coins were produced exclusively at West Point. I also just talked to my local coin dealer and he pulled out a 'Red Book' that shows no mint marks which would indicate the Philadelphia Mint. Anyone out there have a definitive source regarding where and when the eagles were minted? Thanks
I don't think this is exactly what you're looking for, but there's a bunch of good info on this site.. http://silvereagleguide.com/
Check this out old fellow.....http://www.coinnews.net/coins/the-a...oin-history-design-prices-and-mint-figures/#2 Tells it all.
From 1986-1988, Uncirculated Silver Eagles were minted at the Philadelphia facility. From 1999-2000, they were produced in both Philadelphia and West Point. (Since the coins have no mint mark, there’s no way to track where they originated.) Since 2001, the Uncirculated Proof Silver Eagles have been produced solely at West Point. Again, with no mintmark. Hmmm? What about the years 1989 -1999? If they were also minted in Philadelphia, why doesn't the article you sent me say 1986-1998 instead of the break in the years? Or is it just a 'typo' and it shoud say 1986-1998? (By the way, I saw this article before posting the question here and it just added to my confusion.) Thanks for the response. Appreciate it your taking an interest.
I can't seem to get to the annual reports before 2001. (Don't know if I would call the 'Red Book' definitive.) Thanks for taking the time to answer. If I could get to those Annual Mint Reports from the 1986-1998, I would take that as definitive.
Where do you think the Red Book gets their numbers? You could contact the US Mint for prior years Annual Reports, try to go through a public library and at last resource, perhaps the National Archives has a database available for research.

Let me know what tou think.
I have no idea where the 'Red Book' gets their numbers and I in no way want to seem argumentative or unappreciative for your response. I have just been getting some conflicting information over the past past week and I am just trying to clarify some things. Check out this video on youtube regarding silver eagles. It talks about where they were minted and how in some years uncirculated eagles were minted in Philadelphia and West Point. Interesting. <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KCaSFnPSQR...ure=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KCaSFnPSQRg&rel=0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>
I recommend that you not get your information from YouTube and you will be far less confused. Go with the established numismatic publishers, the Mint resources and Red Book guides.
Okay, I've read through this thread at least twice and read the " coinnews.net " link. This all leads me to being totally confused about what I have.(see attached). So what I have are ordinary no mink mark bullion ASE's and " GEM BU " is just hype. Am I correct?
Zeke, most of these coins grade out gem to begin with right out of the mint tube. '67 or higher in most cases......
Gem BU stands for GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. All the Silver Eagles that come from the mint will be GEM BU. If something happens to them after that, then it may no longer qualify as Gem BU. Any scratches or cleaning or dirt or dings will take away from the Gem BU quality of the coin. There are lots of silver eagles out there that would not qualify as Gem BU anymore. By the way Gem BU is not a grade and if you paid a big premium for the coin, then you overpaid. MS69 (which is a grade) coiuld be picked up about 2 to 3 months ago for less than $30.00.
Hey Greenie. Yeah I suspected they were MS quality but bullion is bullion. I think what I have has no mintmark. Don't you think so? Also I don't think I'd be foolish enough to send any of these to a TPG. I doubt I could discern the difference between a MS69 and a MS70. If I can hang on to them without needing the cash, the grand kids will have something worthwhile. They'll be old enough to maybe pass them on to their kids. Geez, maybe I can tape a little note on this tube. zeke
