AGE - best Investment Strategy for AGEs?

    I'm going to buy one each 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz & 1 1/10oz proof gold AGEs.
After giving it some thought I may revise the order to one 4 piece set of AGEs.
I wonder which purchase is the better investment value? one coin each weight or one set of four coins.
also, I'm thinking if prices appreciate significantly the four coin set may be a tough resell.

    what do you think?

    Thanks,

If you are looking at this from a bullion investors point of view then i would just go with 1 ounce uncirculated coins since they have the least amount of premium over spot, but if you are looking at this from a collectors point of view i would stay away from AGE's because they are 100% tied to the spot price of gold and when you go to resell them you will have a hard time finding a dealer that will pay more then spot.

I would go with the individual pieces. I agree resell for the set would be tough, especially if the price appreciates greatly. As far as the individual pieces go, the smaller the weight the greater the premium you will pay. Are you looking at these strictly for the bullion value, or are you looking at something that may have collectors value?

well, like I wondered before, I hope APMEX can accept AGE proof with certain premium mark-up.

  6. The premium on the AGE proofs is much greater than the premium on the bullion versions. I would go with the AGE bullion coins unless you want to collect the proofs. TC

    last year i bought one 2009 UHR proof, one 2009 1oz MS70 AGE, one 2009 1oz AGB proof, one 2009 1oz AGB ms70, one each AGB ms69 2009 1/2oz, 1/4oz & 1/10oz.

last night, in another thread, i read the mintage limit for the 2010 set is 39,000.
    .
I'm buying for bullion appreciation and numismatic enjoyment/appreciation. So far my best gold coin investment is the first one i bought a 1924 $20.00 St Gaudens MS63 purchased in November '08 for $1,066.00

to quote my long gone mom i guess it's "six in one hand and a half dozen in the other" except for probability that the set might be harder to sell.

I'm contemplating a 4-coin set purchase. If I do, it will be at the end of the year or early next year. I may pull the trigger sooner if the price of gold drops .One could always break up the set if need be.

At $3000, I'd be surprised at a one week sell out but we are in uncharted times. With a limited run of 39,000 we shall see. I do think the set will realize better profits in the long run.

For now I'm going to continue to DCA into bullion as I prefer the buffalo as my modern numismatic Au piece.

I just bought one each of the 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz proof coins but I'm leaning toward the four coin set. It didn't occur to me to ask the operator how the sales are going.
What helped me decide to buy individual coins instead of the four piece set is the following mintage numbers from the Mint website:

American Eagle One Ounce Gold Proof Coin - Single Coin Product Limit: 25,000

American Eagle One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coin - Single Coin Product Limit: 15,000

American Eagle One-Quarter Ounce Gold Proof Coin - Single Coin Product Limit: 16,000

American Eagle One-Tenth Ounce Gold Proof Coin - Product Limit: 27,000

American Eagle Gold Proof Four-Coin Set - Product Limit: 39,000

If the four coin sets don't sell out i suppose they'll take the unsold ones and sell them individually which will dilute the individual coins sales.
If the sales numbers aren't diluted then I suspect the 1/2oz and 1/4oz are the proofs to buy.

I think that was a bit of false logic. In the future, when the total mintage is given in terms of the coins potential worth, it won't make any difference. Those numbers will be added to the individual coins when determining the worth of the coins. So if they sell out of all for example, then you will see it reported is there are 64,000 one ounce coins available. There is nothing from stopping someone with a 4 coin set from breaking it up as the only difference is the purchaser gets a holder for the 4 capsules instead of a single coin holder. I suspect some of these will be broken to get slabbed anyway. There will be no way to know which way the coins were originally sold.

I just called the mint and asked how many sets had been ordered and was told they had 11,xxx left so i ordered a four coin set as well.

a break out coin from a set is always worth less than a single coin with complete box and c.o.a. never buy a coin without complete box and c.o.a. unless the price is very much less than a completed one. a set of four coins have their own box and c.o.a.

Midas, see my PM I sent to you.

These sales figures the Mint reported to you do not surprise me at all. Look for elaine_1970 to post updated sales figures sometime today or this week as they release the first sales today I believe. The hype and demand for these coins are up after releasing no Proof 2009-W AGEs. Demand for gold in general is high what with PoG up and new investors seeking gold as dutifully instructed by the headlines to do so-- many new buyers don't even knowing the difference from high priced collectible versions from the Mint to that of bullion versions available from dealers.

Check this thread post for actual mintage limits for the Proof 2010-W AGE coins.

    Thanks Elaine.

These are the 2010-W Proof AGE mintage limits paired with the current reported sales statistics you provided:

2010-W AGE Proof series: (NOT final)

    1 ounce - 13,980 [25,000 +39,000* = 64,000]
    1/2 ounce - 2,173 [15,000 +39,000* = 54,000]
    1/4 ounce - 2,780 [16,000 +39,000* = 55,000]
    1/10 ounce - 6,945 [27,000 +39,000* = 66,000]

*39,000 represents the number of coins in 4-coin sets.

Figures in BLUE represent 2010-W Proof AGE total mintage limits given by the US Mint and published by Coin World on 9/22/2010.

For comparison to last issued Proof AGE coins...

    2008-W AGE Proof series: (Final)

    1 ounce - 17,720
    1/2 ounce - 10,085
    1/4 ounce - 6,360
