The highest amount of silver in one bar that I have seen in real life was a 100-oz Engelhard silver bar that I saw at past coin show.
I will admit that I saw a picture of a 1000-oz silver bar on the APMEX website before in the past but I have not seen a 1000-oz silver bar in person.
In 2007 the American Museum of Natural History in NYC had an exhibition called GOLD. There, I saw many forms of the metal including the 66+ lbs. 1857 Eureka bar which was recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America. It is pictured in the lost section of the GOLD web site. The exhibition also had on display a large case of at least 24 gold bars, each weighing about 27 lbs., which were there on loan from various banks and countries. The case is pictured in the gold standard section of that site. (Note: Also pictured on the GOLD exhibition web site is an image showing a view inside of a vault at the NY Federal Reserve bank in lower Manhattan, that gold was not on display in the exhibition.) Silver: In person, I was fortunate to glimpse 100 oz. bars together in one place totaling more than 1000 oz. I don't know how much was before me, but there were more than 10 of these 100 oz. bars being temporarily stored in a large safe. This was nearly 25 years ago and they belonged to a retail coin and jewelry shop owner at the time. That was very cool to see!
One of the local coin shops had two 1000 ounce bars in the shop last week. They would make a great doorstop.
I practically work in the same room as a 1000 oz bar. Nobody ever asks to buy one though, for some inexplicable reason that will probably never be resolved....
I went to a coin show last November and a dealer had one of the 1,000 ounce silver bricks. They were only asking $13,000 at that time; a total steal (even at the price of silver at that time); I remember talking to my uncle, saying we should get a quick loan, buy it, sell it on ebay, payoff the loan, and split the profits. Of course this would have been extremely risky, especially since it's quite difficult to prove the legitimacy of bars of that size.
I too have been in similar predicaments with people, trying to convince them to pull the trigger on something big. It`s not easy convincing some people that it takes money to make money. Just be aware of ebay though....after their acquisition of paypal, they did away with all other payments except their "ebay credit card." I put something on there recently that sold for $730, and had almost $80 in fees between ebay and paypal.(no preferred listing and only 2 pics) Rapists they have become.
Yep. I sold a couple bars and stuff i had bought over the years with money i earned from birthdays and chores and stuff. i grossed 900ish, but ebay took a cut of over 100! with paypal and ebay fees, they take over 10% nowadays
