For what it is worth, I do not subscribe to conspiracy theories any more than you or the average person does. Nevertheless, facts are facts and to deny so one might as well stick their head into the sand. And yes, you are right again -- opinions are like ........, everybody has one, eh?

I agree. Thanks for posting enough so that everybody can decide for themselves whether or not your assertions are factual.

Not wanting to get into conspiracy theories either, but these chips ( IF ) they ever become feasible, can save lives of individuals who do not carry medical IDs, or records on their person. They are R/W so new info could be added, such as new allergy to a medication, etc. But if a person is paranoid, there is equipment and procedures that you could write any false name, etc. on the chip, or just zap the chip itself. No need to get out the old Bowie and carve it from your flesh, unless you are into that sort of thing :)

You ask people to cut back on their debt and eliminate some of the excessive benefits that they have, and they riot in the streets. And you think these same people are just going to sit back and let some industry tag with them an implanted computer chip. Riots would be an understatement.

But, fact from opinion is never an easy subject. I was taught that in school. The questions that asked I got a lot of them wrong. For instance, "the car is red." Is that a fact or opinion. Because even though a majority of people will say it is red, some color blind person might not see it that way. Once he says it's an off orange color, does that change the fact to opinion.....or is he wrong?

Likewise, "a nickel is larger than a dime." While true in terms of size dimensions and weight isn't true for simply face value. So, what if someone sees the value and says, "no, the dime is larger than the nickel." Does that make it fact or opinion?

There is no clear line between fact and opinion. Every fact is opinionated, and every opinion has some fact to it, even if the logic of that fact is faulty.

There are always people who fear things they think they have no control over, so I can understand why there would be distrust. My grandmother ( long deceased) once told me that when counties started requiring birth certificates, rather than letting the family just write the information in their Bible, the people started predicting it was the mark of Satan and the end of time. RFID chips can have their uses, and of course possible misuses. If you understand their limitations, they should induce no fear.

There are plenty of things that are more worrisome to me. How do we know that the government hasn't forced Intel and AMD to design "Carnivore" or Narusinsight type of software into your processor that can monitor your computer and report to the "Conspiring Government" or upon signal can kill your computer and all internet activity? New all electronic phones can be "opened" from another phone so everything within sensitivity of the phone microphone can be heard. 2600 Magazine had a recent article how you can "catch" unused (at the time) bluetooth attachments( headsets) and open them to listen to the wearer's conversations through it.

Now the Intel/AMD is just for fun, but the latter 2 are occurring today without people knowing.

Well, I don't have a cell phone and no blue tooth. So, that stuff is mostly voluntary. Don't want one so I don't have to worry about anyone looking at anything.

If computer use was so simple to decipher, the police wouldn't confiscate people's computers. They'd be able to access the computers files without the actual getting a search warrant and physically taking the person's computer.

If what you said is happening, why aren't there more computer activity arrests, based solely on evidence obtained from these operations.

Fantasy land if you ask me. Not that this stuff isn't possible, it probably is. But I don't see it being used that way.

Good examples. This is what I mean by schools not teaching people the difference between fact and opinion. If they cloud your reasoning capability by tricking you into believing that everything is opinion and that facts rarely exist, you become easy to manipulate. Politicians thrive on the ability to manipulate the public.

Red is a particular wavelength of light that can be scientifically measured. The inability of certain people to perceive it doesn't change the fact.

A nickel is larger than a dime. A dime is more valuable than a nickel. Size and value are not synonyms. The inability to use language precisely is the source of many problems.

I would suggest that if you consciously work on developing the habit of accurate thinking, of separating fact from opinion, of seeking the truth in every situation, of demanding evidence, it will pay dividends that spill over into every area of your life.

For transmitted light that is true. But color has two aspects, transmitted and reflected. In the case of the red car, it is reflected light, as the car itself isn't emitting the light, it is just reflecting light that is hitting it. Red comes from the lack of green light, which is absorbed and not re-emitted. So, lack of green light is what makes it red. How much green light much be absorbed before the color can be called red is opinionated.

Regardless, though. Take this as a factual statement. "There are 7 pieces of chocolate on the table." Completely factual, but when you go to the table, you see 6 pieces of chocolate and one piece of tootsie roll. Just because something is a factual statement doesn't necessarily mean it is true!

Read that one over a few times. :rolling:

If this is what you learned in school :desk:, you should go back and ask for a refund. This is a very good illustration of the point I was trying to make. It is unfortunate that so many people have been "educated" in this manner.

The assertions regarding this invasive technique are absolutely correct. The reason that people do not see this happening is because the information so garnered is primarily utilized to seek out legal means of further obtaining evidence that actually can be legally used to stem criminal activity such as drug deals, etc. Matters not whether or not one has a cell phone or blue tooth since most people do carry them. All one needs to do is have a conversation near one and it is subject to eavesdropping, regardless of whether or not the phone is turned on and even if the batteries are removed. As long as responsible parties continue to use this technique in a responsible manner, people are none the wiser and the process will continue on. There is always the potential for abuse, however, and it is when such occurs that even bigger problems occur. As with many such things, when the criminals figure out ways to use such in reverse, then they might start spying on the spies so to speak.

Ditto with computers, as previously mentioned, there are programs that capture nearly everything one does on them and much of is run through filters for keywords. Some is done by the government, some by private marketing firms, etc. etc. Others like eBay simply plant cookies into your computer as a matter of course just for the privilege of using their website so they can track your activities while there and where you go after you leave their site, or where you came from before you got there. Waiting for the legal system to correct abuses or even set up systems to deal with them would be like trying to drain the ocean one molecule at a time.

Sweeper, can you tell me if this is fact or opinion...."Dogs are bigger than cats."

P.S. Or how about this one, "all birds fly."

There are flightless birds, and dogs and cats come in all sizes depending on breed and species respectively. Whether or not I answer to your satisfaction does not change the situation. Neither question will permit you to wiggle out of the predicament you are in as a result of your belief that there is no benefit to accurate thinking because everything is opinion. I feel sorry for you because you have been robbed of a precious ability that all educated people should be able to exercise, but many cannot these days. Now, you are faced with the difficult task of unlearning that which you believe correct that isn't, or going through life intellectually handicapped. I wish you good luck in your efforts if you should decide to correct this flaw in thinking.

Well, I made those because both are factual statements, although both are generalities and subject to exceptions, like most anything else in life.

There is a difference between a factual statement and an actual fact. And the difference is factual statements can be wrong.

But seeing as this thread has now been completely derailed, I won't stress any of these points anymore. But recall that you are the one that claims people don't know how to distinguish fact from opinion. You couldn't even answer either of the two statement I put up above as fact or opinion......I think because you realized that there are too many factors to make statements factual, and there are so many reasons facts based on generalizations and faulty reasoning can be skewed to make them appear like the truth.

P.S. And I find it sad your final argument was to belittle me, instead of supporting you view.

Hang in there, I think you guys are actually on the verge of agreeing tho the fine points and semantics may be standing in the way. Just because you said it one way and not the way the other guy thinks it has to be said does not make you wrong, it just means that you are not walking in lockstep like robots.

No, I don't think so. But I think there are enough examples in the thread for people to make up their own minds about the value of separating fact from opinion in their own lives. It's a mindset and a choice.

I believe I read somewhere that he asked for delivery and when they couldn't meet his delivery demand, he let them off the hook by charging them $.50 premium per ounce they couldn't deliver. Instant cash out of nothing!
